Qazt: Ossetian Urban Rituals in Vladikavkaz

Qazt is a traditional game among the Ossetians. It is a ritualistic, musical, dance, and social space that forms on various festive occasions. During the qazt, young people would socialize, boys would showcase their courage, and they would compete in various heroic and joyful activities. In 2020, we traveled to Vladikavkaz to explore the urban qazts, make a documentary film, and issue this release. We were interested in qazt as a new cultural phenomenon, an event of urban culture, and a modern form of Ossetian self-organization.

Yuz, Jazz, Irka and the Dog

In Soviet times, the songs "Soviet Easter", "Cigarette Butt", "Comrade Stalin" were sung by the whole country (and, according to rumors, members of the politburo also enjoyed it), but few people knew that these "folk" hits had an author – Yuz Aleshkovsky. Having traveled from East to West, he became a famous writer in a country that is still considered the most reading. The concepts of Freedom and Creativity for him are not so much philosophical categories, but a credo of life. The genre of Sergei Miroshnichenko's new film can be defined as "a lyrical post-Soviet comedy with a dramatic touch."

The Town Festival

The small town of Kalyazin on the banks of the Volga is famous for its bell tower rising right out of the water. More than half a century ago, during the construction of the Uglich hydroelectric power station, half of the city was flooded. Quiet sleepy streets that go straight into the river make this place really special. Like a mermaid who has climbed ashore, Kalyazin anxiously breathes the half-heartedness of his earthly fate. But every day bread is baked, children are born, women bend over sewing machines, men work behind the machines, asserting the desperate struggle of life where it seems that everything is meaningless and fleeting. Like a river along which large elegant steamboats sail past the bell tower, saying that somewhere there is a completely different life.

Celestial Crimea

The Crimea in the films is a miniature copy of the planet, a “vibrant heart” of the Earth. This place conceals the power of the four elements, there you’ll find everything: mountains, the sea, forests, the tropics, the savannah, sand deserts, swamps, a dormant volcano, salt lakes, cosmic landscapes which look alien on our planet. Space photography emphasizes the cosmic scale of narration. New technologies permit us to see unique natural phenomena which are inaccessible to the human eye.

The Discrete Charm of Geometry

A team of mathematicians is working together on a big project. Excitement of discovery, hope and disappointment, competition and recognition are shown from an infinitely close distance. Scientists united by the idea of discretization, which, in short, means: constructing continuous objects from basic building blocks. Akin to the scientists' search for the right discretization of continuum, this film itself is composed of fragments - individual characters of different ages, temperaments and scientific approaches - which form a single continuous melody. The question of where the boundaries lie between mathematics and the lives of those who are involved in it and how much they are willing to sacrifice is as important as the search for precise scientific answers. A unique and unprecedented dive into the unknown world of mathematicians.

Presidential Candidate

Galina Starovoitova entered politics two years before the collapse of the USSR, at the time of radical changes in the country; and all her activities over the course of ten years, until the moment of the murder, was both a hit on time and a fantastic advance. She was a real politician of the 90s, built a young Russian democracy, looked to the future with hope, soberly and bitterly assessing the present. But she can also be safely called a politician of the XXI century: Galina Starovoitova spoke about the most important current problems of our society, ahead of her time by several decades.

Figner: The End of a Silent Century

Through her very real subject Edgar Figner, director Nathalie Alonso Casale offers us an intimate sense of the 21st-century Russian zeitgeist. A true alchemist, Mr. Figner has spent his life in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) as a sound-effects artist at Lenfilm Studios, where from the silent era to the present he has used commonplace objects (cabbages, old shoes) to create complex sound effects for films. Under the pressures of contemporary Russian life, Figner begins to retreat into a past comprising his own personal history and the history of Russian cinema. As reality and memory blend with stunning scenes from Soviet films, Figner’s art becomes a soundtrack for the muffled culture created by the repression of the Soviet era. This delicate mix of documentary, reality and cinematic imagination creates a deeply sensitive account of the silences at the heart of the Russian social, political and cinematic experience.
