Solar Lands

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío fulfilled a dream of youth, travelling to Spain and touring Andalusia. It was a journey in search of the sun and a light that would heal him from his chronic bronchitis and the sadness in which he was submerged. An expedition in search of beauty, to the lands of the sun. Solar Lands presents this little-mentioned moment in the life of Darío, but it also helps us to learn about his life and the main characteristics and importance of his complete work from the hand of specialists and high-level women and men of letters. The actor Pedro Casablanc gives voice to the verses of Rubén Darío in this beautiful documentary, which was Laura Hojman's first directing work.

El Rastro

In the sixties, just before starting his career as a feature film director and his parallel career of the Anticine, Javier Aguirre had a brief career as a documentary filmmaker, which served him to test and rehearse many procedures that he would put into practice in the avant-garde aspect of his work. The trail belongs to that period, a few years full of mystery, but whose works are emerging demonstrating the portentous gaze of Aguirre. The trace has hardly been seen in the last sixty years, and it is an opportunity to recover this vision between anthropology and the vanguard of one of the hallmarks of this city. The film has been restored by the ECAM Archive in collaboration with Filmoteca Española.

Drifts

The beginning of the twenty-first century is marked by a contradictory intersection between the transformation of the global economy and the revolution in new technologies. These two disparate new realities have disrupted customs and traditions and are now bearing witness to different drifts, some with times that anesthetize and others that excite and exhilarate, yet without knowing where they are heading. The place portrayed in Derivas (Drifts), associated with the frontier of the sea and fishing boats, begins to be occupied by nomadic flows of people whose interests are very different to the origin of this place, completely redrawing and resituating new events.

Five Days to Dance

A couple of dancers appear one morning in a High School. It's Monday and they announce to a group of youngsters that they have five days to get up on stage and dance. A short time but a big challenge. The dance compels these youngsters to break through their roles exactly at the time of their lives when the social roles are being forged. The handsome boy is no longer the most admired, the timid one takes a step forward. Wilfried van Popple and Amaya Lubeigt are the choreographers. Professional dancers who have decided now to work with people who have never danced before. This is the challenge: five days, a class of teenagers, a microcosm in which occurs a little big bang.

Savages: The Wolf's Tale

Distant mountains, isolated shepherds, and a government determined to protect an invisible animal. But imposing an urban law in a rural environment will not be easy. In the north of Spain, a group of cattle ranchers declare rebellion and opt for self-government. In the crossfire: photographers, forest rangers and naturalists. "Salvajes" shows the most western Spain in a frenetic story of characters where morality and damage depend on which side of the valley you ask the question.

Empoderío

Amid laughter and companionship, a group of gypsy women improvise sequences in a room at the Otxarkoaga Civic Centre. The soft morning light filters through the purple curtains, while one of them dissects a film about a group of gypsy women at a performance workshop. Reality and fiction merge. Playfulness, fun, empowerment and sisterhood all combine in this documentary, intended as a love letter to the gypsy women of the Basque Country. A bridge, a joyful song and hands clapping in the wind, reminding us that stories (even if improvised and invented) are what we need to bring different people together.
