Having received an injury to the cervical spine, a person does not just get into a wheelchair, he loses the mobility of his hands and even simple actions, like eating, become a real test. Can a person in this position become a deputy of the State Duma? Or get into the Russian national team? Hitchhiking? Skydiving? Plunge into the ice hole on the feast of the Epiphany? It turns out that in the world of limited opportunities there are a lot of absolutely healthy people, but not the guys from the Russian Paralympic team in wheelchair rugby.

Open Hearts

Dr. Jeff Kempf from Akron Children’s Hospital (Ohio, USA), and doctors from the USA, Italy, Haiti, and France, demonstrate a new way of helping as they attempt to complete 12 complicated operations while simultaneously challenging conventional wisdom by building up the staff and facilities at St. Damien’s Hospital (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) to become self sufficient. These unprecedented efforts, spearheaded by Gift of Life and Rotary Club, have enabled St. Damien’s to become the first hospital in Haiti capable of treating children with Heart Disease, have allowed Dr. Alexandra Noisette to become the first Haitian pediatric cardiologist, and represents the only collaboration of charities providing heart surgery in Haiti. “Charity” must change, and this bold re-imagination of how charity can work paints a picture of how countries like Haiti can become self sustaining.

soulitate

In the run-up to the Danish general election in 2019, a pop-up chai bar opened on a street corner in Århus. Here, you could enjoy a cup of chai tea and a chat with someone who might not resemble you in terms of opinions and appearance. Many people made use of this possibility, and when you see Shubhdeep Singh Parwana’s ‘soulitate’, which was the name of the café, you wish you could have been there yourself. In response to a political debate that rapidly turned black-and-white inside the echo chambers, soulitate (the place and the film!) is a wonderful reminder of how much we actually have in common – and how much we can learn from each other when we engage with and listen to each other.

Ramdan Muslim - in Quarantine with God

The corona year 2020 has been examined from all angles by the media. But what was it like to hold Ramadan in a year of restrictions, prohibitions and social distancing? Six young Muslims express their thoughts and feelings about a different kind of year when communal meals and prayer lines were replaced by a quarantine that pulls the individual relationship with God into focus. What can poetry and the quarantine of the heart teach us about a deeper meaning at a time when illness and fear are so predominant? And what kind of spirituality do we dare imagine in a society that moves further and further away from believing in God?

The Sisters of Protest

A documentary film dedicated to girls who went through detention and arrest during the Belarusian protests in August 2020. The first-person film tells how a prison cell changes a person and how long it takes to find a way out – even after being released. “The Sisters of Protest” is a series of monologues of people from different backgrounds, woven into the common experience of a Belarusian girl who is not ready to remain silent when she is deprived of her basic rights.
