In Russian - "Special Military Operation", in Nanai - "War"

The Nanaisky district, situated on the northeastern banks of the Amur River, lies northeast of Khabarovsk. The Nanai people are among the indigenous communities of the Far East, numbering approximately 12 thousand in Russia. Andrei Beldy, a cultural advocate for the Nanai community residing in the village of Naikhin, expresses concern about the fading of traditions and the Nanai language. Only a few hundred individuals can speak it fluently, with local children receiving instruction from an enthusiastic linguist from Veliky Novgorod. Beldy recounts the historical displacement of Nanais to Sakhalin during Stalin's era to populate the former Japanese territory. He criticizes the current authorities for restricting free fishing, a traditional occupation for the Nanai people. Most villages lack access to gas, and timber is exported abroad. With the onset of the war in Ukraine, many Nanai residents, including the elderly and deceased, received conscription notices.

Inari Sámi Ulpu’s home language was Finnish. Inari Sámi was not spoken in the family after her grandfather went to an orphanage in the 1920s, where speaking his native language was forbidden. As she is becoming a mother, Ulpu begins to wonder about her culture, her linguistic identity, and the generational trauma inherited from her grandfather from a new point of view. Learning Inari Sámi and passing the language to her children seems like a challenging but empowering process, which has the power to open generational knots.

My mother, Carol Frieda Herman P. Hirsch, Chaya bas Moshe ve Yehudit, died on June 23, 2022, at home, the way she wanted her last weeks to be. Self-determined, surrounded by majestic trees outside the windows, with birds chirping in the background. With her books in shelves nearby. Even when she lacked the energy to read, she was glad to have those books near her. And she enjoyed the smells of good food, her music and other simple things as long as it was possible. The choice to use film material that was way past its sell-by date corresponds with how, as one approaches the end of one’s life, things fall apart, gradually. A tribute.

Etoiles noires

The Paris Opera is one of the world's most prestigious opera houses. Guillaume Diop was appointed principal dancer there in 2023—the first person of color in the opera's history. In the orchestra pit, Sulivan Loiseau plays The Nutcracker on the double bass. She is the first Black musician in the Paris Opera Orchestra. It's not just Diop and Loiseau's exceptional talent that continues to attract attention, but also their skin color. Some consider them role models. Others believe the opera is using them to fulfill its diversity quota. This documentary follows these young talents over a season and shows the cultural institution in its attempts to better reflect multicultural society.
