Schattenland - Reise nach Masuren

A documentary about Masuria, a province in the northeast of Poland, which is probably the most renowned part of former East-Prussia. Albeit a recent boom in tourism, the sparsely populated region still remains one of the poorest regions in Europe. The impressively photographed film reflects upon the eventful history of this land: It portrays farmers, who struggle to work the barren land; fishermen, who fight for their existence, and Ukrainians, who were once forced to relocate and now return to their old home in the East.

Alpine Saga

Award-winning director Langjahr returns to his beloved Alps to document a group of people continuing the legacy of their forefathers. Every year on Swiss National day, August 1, the Wildheuer climb up the steep mountain of the «Hinteren Heubrig», fitted out with scythes and wearing wooden shoes with spikes, just as their ancestors did before them. They are part of a generation who have lived with the challenges of nature and survived it. In his film, Langjahr's poetic realism gives an insight into these people's experience of the simple life, the very foundation of human existence.

Podul Peste Tisa

Bridges are built to connect people, unless it is forbidden to cross them. The towns of Sighet in Romania and Ukrainian Slatina are separated by the river Tisza. A recently rebuilt bridge is supposed to not only reunite the two towns but also bring back together friends and relatives who have been divided throughout history by various political decisions. The former bridge was destroyed by German troops in 1944. After WWII, the border was closed. For 50 years there was nothing but silence between the inhabitants of Romanian Sighet and the city of Slatina, which then belonged to the Soviet Union. The film documents the long, often absurd and eventually vain struggle of the local inhabitants and politicians to reconnect the two communities.

The Engineer’s Voice

A man’s voice from offscreen. He lists individual words, has problems of articulation. At first these are abstract terms, the screen stays black. Sky, street, village and house, however, are accompanied by suitable images. They take us into the speaker’s life. It is his house. These are his automatic shutters. We look into the kitchen where his wife is preparing something. He exercises in a specially equipped room. Later he sits in front of the microphone again, obviously recording his voice to preserve it. Another dimension opens between the recorded words and sentences and beyond the images. There is an inevitability in the room – and a great love. The robot vacuum makes its rounds. Who will put the words stored on the computer into a meaningful context later?

972 Breakdowns - On The Landway to New York

After their graduation, Anne, Efy, Elisabeth, Johannes, and Kaupo get their motorcycle licenses and set off on four old rusty Ural 650 sidecar motorcycles, travelling eastward from Germany to New York City. When plans collapse things start to get interesting. Roads dissolve into deserts, swamps, and rivers until they reach the 80 kilometres of open sea separating Russia from Alaska, the Bering Strait. Their unreliable motorcycles suffer ongoing breakdowns and the raw and rugged terrain throws them the most unrelenting difficult challenges. Equipped with no more than naivety and persistence they somehow make their way through the most isolated corners of the world. After 20,000 km of breakdowns, all roads end and the only way to get closer to the Bering Strait is by The Kolyma, a remote 1,600 km long river. To cross it, the group build an amphibious motorcycle rig that will lead them closer to Bering Strait.

Sumpfland Taiga - Das Berezinsky-Biosphärenreservat

The Berezinsky Biosphere Reserve in Belarus is an undisturbed realm in the southern taiga. Extensive swamps, a complex river system, and numerous lakes bear witness to the glaciers that once covered the area. It is unique because it contains so many different types of natural swamps. The "Big Five" of European wildlife live here in one place: bear, wolf, lynx, bison, and elk. And the black grouse, which has become extremely rare in Europe, gathers here every April for mating season. It is an extraordinary spectacle when the imposing blue-black black grouses make their courtship calls in the swamps. Those who immerse themselves in the world of the Berezinsky Biosphere Reserve gain an incomparable insight into the vast mosaic of floodplain forests, lakes, and acidic peat bogs.
