urgewald – Auf den Spuren des Geldes

When nature is destroyed, climate targets are disregarded and human rights are violated, there is always a lot of money behind it. This is where urgewald comes in. Since 1992, the environmental and human rights organization has been revealing the sources of money behind destructive projects. Over 30 years ago, a handful of activists gathered around a table in a shared flat to form the basis of the organization. Since then, the small club in the Münsterland province has become a recognized, powerful organization.

Welcome to Yiddishland

An upbeat, witty, and timely exploration of a global community of artists creating innovative work in their quest to rediscover and revitalise the endangered Yiddish language. From behind-the-scenes with an acclaimed Yiddish-language version of Yentl in Melbourne, to enjoyably transgressive punk-Klezmer musicians, and Barrie Kosky’s latest trailblazing production in Berlin – the endangered Yiddish language is alive and well in this rousing documentary. The language originated amongst the Jewish community in Eastern Europe, but almost disappeared when more than half of the world’s Yiddish speakers were murdered during the Holocaust. Most of the artists and performers (aka Yiddishists) in the film didn’t grow up speaking Yiddish, but all have found solace, identity, and inspiration in its rich traditions and culture. Ros Horin has mapped a fascinating cultural history.

Migrations We Are

Migrations We Are is one of the chapters in a series of twelve poetic essays titled Si, Dodecalogue, which is dedicated to timeless heroes. If the stories of the cities become those of everyone inhabiting them, the only way to build one’s identity remains the Imaginary. Therefore, revealing in filigree her socio-cultural fabric, an Argentinian-Montrealer artist reacts to the brilliance of her time through what she paints, films, and writes in different languages. This chapter is dedicated to Pierre Allard, visual artist, and Marcelin François, beneficiary attendant.

Love Bound

LGBTQ+ activist Qiuyan Chen became an unexpected celebrity due to her courageous legal battle against homophobic university textbooks in the 2010s. However, this newfound fame came at a price: she was outed by her tutor, subjected to conversion therapy by her parents, and monitored by the Chinese government. To escape these pressures, Qiuyan left for the UK, where she met her partner Bling: but her struggles were far from over. Interweaving reflections on Qiuyan’s sexuality and relationships, Shanshan Chen’s documentary examines this inspiring activist’s commitmentto building a close-knit community designed to support queer East Asian people in the UK: a solo endeavour that evolves into a movement with a growing support base.

Lyonel Feininger – Ein Künstler zwischen den Welten

Lyonel Feininger's work is as individual and unmistakable as he is himself. As a classical modernist artist, he is difficult to categorize. He lived and worked in Germany for a long time. He began his career as a caricaturist, later became known as a painter and headed the printing workshops at the Bauhaus. His work cannot be classified as cubism or expressionism. The film visits places that inspired him, such as Paris, the villages around Weimar and, above all, the Baltic coast - many of which are reflected in Feininger's work and make the development of his oeuvre comprehensible.

Coney Island - As Primeiras Vezes

Three times she travelled until the last stop on the F line. Each as if it was the first. There she found a meatless Disneyland, only skin, bone and memories. She thought of Dorothy and her dog. On her skin she felt the taste of the sea and she discovered new flavours as she dived into the freezing cold water. Now she fears everything will vanish like a wave that goes and never returns. Unlike her, I never travelled to the end of the F line. But I can see, hear and feel it. Can you?

Vasa: The Ghost Ship

The Vasa, one of the most majestic galleons ever to put to sea, sank 18 minutes after leaving Stockholm harbour on her maiden voyage in 1628. The loss of the Vasa was a major setback for Sweden’s ambitions to become a power in the Baltic during a turbulent period of European history. Three centuries later, in 1961, the wreck of the Vasa was raised. Remarkably well preserved by the mud and water in the Baltic Sea, she is a 17th-century time machine. Following the work of archaeologists, divers and historians, this programme plunges into Stockholm harbour to make new discoveries and reveal more about the lives of those who built, sailed and died on one of the most powerfully armed warships of her time.

The windows

In June 2024, the photographer María Cano presented a series of pictures in the window of "Es Mirador", in Set Cantons street in Palma (Mallorca). One night I was walking around the area with my little camera and decided to record the Maria's work and the space around it. The photographs in the window showed disjointed figures and faces that seemed to come out of a nightmare. Every one of them gave me a feeling of terrible anxiety. They were faces, hands and metaphorical cries that denounced a problem that affects a large part of the young population: the problem of housing. With these recordings as a starting point, I began to make this audiovisual piece.
