A New Home

Examines the story of Bosnian War refugees fleeing to St. Louis, Missouri, which is now home to more displaced Bosnians than any other city in the world. In 1992, with the Bosnian War raging, thousands of Bosnians sought refuge in America. Chosen because of its affordable housing and available jobs, a large number of those Bosnians ended up in St. Louis, Missouri. Once there, they began assimilating, starting their own businesses, and transforming a once dilapidated neighborhood into a thriving "Little Bosnia." Over the ensuing three decades, an estimated 70,000 Bosnians have migrated to St. Louis, making it the most inhabited area for Bosnians outside of Bosnia itself. A New Home tells the story of these refugees' perseverance and determination to not only start life over but prosper. — Joseph Puleo

Sisterless

Sisterless revolves around Albina's psychological reality, seen through a young Tatar woman in Russia. Albina dreamed of becoming a psychoanalyst. Instead, she underwent several episodes of psychosis and psychiatric hospitalizations after her sister Almira experienced psychosis and took her own life. Sisterless is an unsentimental attempt to analyze the work of grief, a feminist commentary on the connection between illness, the contemporary political condition and the consequences of post-Soviet displacement. The narrative is based on conversations between the artist and Albina collected over a year and a half.

They

The movie is filmed around the streets of suburban districts of Baku. The background voices are from the interviews about LGBTI+s from the general public. Minority Magazine (the only LGBTI+ magazine in the country) carries out public surveys and interviews about queer experiences in the streets of Baku and the results are mostly very hateful and alarmingly homophobic and transphobic. Many people see queerness as a major sin or health issue, or just deny the community’s existence by just simply ignoring LGBTI+s. The phobia against the community affects trans people and particularly trans sex workers the most and unfortunately, many trans folks are the victims of hate crimes in the country. For the past 5 years, Azerbaijan is ranked as the most dangerous and worst country to live in for LGBTI+s by ILGA-Europe. Rising homophobia and transphobia raise major concerns for the community and the film addresses the realities of public opinions about the queer community.
