The Division Among Us

One of the most critical explanations of our political state is how Americans have seemingly split themselves into where they live by their political preferences (Klein, 2020). Using this knowledge, I focus on recent events in American politics to test this rural-urban divide. I interview six participants, three from a rural community, two from an urban community, and one from a suburban community. In these interviews, and in a supplemental survey, I ask how these citizens feel about the 2020 election, the events of January 6th and the current state of American democracy. To fully showcase this research, I use these interviews to create a documentary . The interviews and survey illustrate that the rural-urban divide continues to be a good predictor of political opinion, with rural participants tending to be more forgiving of, or even uninterested in, the insurrection.

Beta Israel is a Jewish community of several tens of thousands who lived in Ethiopia before the mass repatriation to Israel in the late twentieth century. Ruchama Ehrenhalt's short film is set about the filmmaker's nephew, the son of her sister, a white American-Israeli woman, and her husband, a dark-skinned Ethiopian Jew. Around the age of three, the boy began to notice that he looked nothing like either his «light» mom or his «dark» dad. The film explores the phenomenon of biracial children and how skin color from an early age influences the formation of their identity.

To Future Listeners I

To Future Listeners I (2022) is a digital performance video that traces sounds from the past. It starts with a contemplation of ethnographic recordings produced by American anthropologists in the late 19th century who used phonographs to record the music and language of endangered indigenous peoples. The song in the video is Love Song: Ar-ra-rang 1 recorded on a wax cylinder in 1896 by American anthropologist Alice Fletcher, who requested its performance by three Korean students in Washington at the time. This was apparently the first example in the history of Korean traditional music being captured with a recording medium.

The education of deaf children has left lifelong consequences due to ossified teaching and violation of basic rights to use sign language. Shocking personal confessions reveal how the ban on the use of the mother tongue in education had a fatal impact on the deaf linguistic minority. As a result of the linguistic genocide, which lasted for an entire century, all conditions were established for the final extinction of the Slovenian sign language. The deaf community, with the help of its representative disability organization and societies, united in efforts to prevent this from happening. Deaf people have been strengthening their cultural creativity throughout this little revolution,
