Neue Deutsche Welle - Revolte, Spaß und Da-Da-Da

Shrill, loud, colorful and fun - that's what Neue Deutsche Welle stands for. Songs like "Ich will Spaß", "Sternenhimmel" and "99 Luftballons" are still a must at any good party today. Yet the songs are already over 30 years old - just like the movement itself. The wave spilled over into Germany at the end of the 70s. For a long time, German musicians copied what was happening in the USA or Great Britain. There were hardly any German-speaking pop stars at the time. Inspired by punk, German musicians began to experiment at the beginning of the eighties: initially, the music was still characterized by cool synthesizer sounds and provocative lyrics.

Save and Be Saved

The film crew travels on a train in a reserved seat across Russia, talking with passengers about the war. The main characters are guys of military age, ordinary Russians, without savings and the opportunity to leave the country. They are against war and are not afraid to talk about it and, moreover, they are not afraid to fight for their rights even where it seems that this is impossible. Bad and good Russians. Who are they and what do they look like? Did all the good people really leave Russia, or is there still someone left there?

Seestück

Following Landstück (2016), Volker Koepp's documentary Seestück is about the magical, natural setting of the Baltic Sea, its coasts and its people – including fishermen, seamen, scientists and young people on both the Baltic and Scandinavian shores. Conversations meander from Caspar David Friedrich to Copernicus, Rousseau and Kant, or simply life itself. Present concerns address the sea's threatened ecosystem and political frictions among the neighbouring countries. One universal truth applies for the small Baltic Sea too: The landscape is a window to the world.

The Nature of My Heart

This is a film about the passions of the human relationship with nature. A journey to the roots of the passion takes us to the backwoods of rural Finland. On our way, we encounter eccentric fellows, who have devoted their lives to nature. They are haunted by the call of the wild, the idea of being part of nature, or the sensation of companionship with wild animals. On one hand, the nature must be protected from the human influence. On the other hand one has a lust to get where no one has gone before. In order to get in touch with nature, one relies on technologies that separate his body from it. We are guided by the enthusiasts’ passions to the nature of their experiences. What do they tell of our modern life?

History of the German Luftwaffe 1914 - 1945

No sooner the first aircraft rose into the sky, the military took hold of the new invention. As far back as World War 1 daredevil pilots engaged into the fighting and aces like Manfred von Richtofen or Ernst Udet became admired heroes. Practically disbanded due to the Versailles Treaty, the German Air Force developed in hiding. After having been "service-tested" in the Spanish Civil War, Hitler built her up with vigor to a powerful military machine, which made possible the "blitz" victories ine the first year of the war. To counter the rising allied airpower, german engineers took the first jet aircraft and rockets. Revolutionary innovations as they were, too late to hinder the military collapse. In depth and by partly never before seen takings in colour as well as black and white, this film shows the development of the german Air Force in the years 1914 until 1945.

Romathan

Documentary about the Roma theater of the same name in Kosice, Slovakia, which is organized and run exclusively by Roma and is unique in Europe. After more than 40 years of silence and social and artistic exclusion of the Roma, ROMATHAN is a first cautious step toward carving out a "space of normality" in an otherwise hostile environment. The ensemble has given us an insight into its everyday theater life, and we encounter its members as artistic and creative people who are learning to regain their dignity and self-confidence.

Young Pines

Young Pines grew out of three trips to Japan between May 2009 and November 2010. Invited to Japan for a series of film screenings, I began filming in Yokohama, Tokyo, and Kanazawa. Even in the big cities, I experienced how strongly the Japanese feel connected to nature and how they tend to see no contradiction between culture and nature. I found this stimulating and in harmony with some of my own impulses. I wanted to return and film more in other seasons. In Spring 2010 I visited Kamakura, Kyoto, and Nara, in November I went Northeast and filmed in Matsushima, Tono, Miyako in Atsumi, Yamadera, and Nikko. All of my film images have been filmed before the disaster of the Tsunami and Fukushima, but the final editing was done in the following months.
