Blanco y fucsia

I get home late from my underpaid job. I open the fridge and remember that I didn't have the time to cook for today or buy any groceries. It's the end of the month and I can't afford eating out. I lustily scan my flat mates' shelves, but there's nothing I can steal without it being too noticeable. I end up boiling some pasta, pour some pesto sauce on top of it, and take the plate to my room. Filled with posters, pictures, and drawings, my wall becomes a window. I close my eyes, I'm not there anymore -I'm in a different time, somewhe-re not here.

Make a Distinction

A family has lunch under the shade of a C-47 warcraft. An army installation contains the last remnants of an endangered grassland ecology. Young filmmakers hone their skills making a cop show on Chicago streets. Stylized scenes of field botanists, retail clerks, and soldiers in Clarksville, Tennessee and television workers, and police in Chicago, Illinois reveal the unseen forces of imperialism in US daily life. An examination of a television production and quotations from revolutionary and resistance fighters build to a provocation: name the enemy or become it.

Sorties

A pandemic diary filmed mostly in NYC, incorporating Super 8 and digital video recorded with Street's unique experimental eye. "From the uncertain first months when every foray felt perilous to various re openings, outings are recorded and reflections shared. Stills punctuate abstract and documentary footage, offering a collage of mediums in the face of the unknowable. "Sorties" is a military term-- a mission launched from a defensive position. That's sort of what a walk felt like in March 2020 in NYC. And then of course things changed; cases went up and down, the science evolved, fear waxed and waned. Of course, the pandemic continues; but I had to limit myself in making the film; March 2020-August 2021."

Elephant Food Is for the Strongest Teeth

In Kano City, Northern Nigeria, crowds gather to watch local heroes face off in the ancient Hausa martial art of Dambe. Part battle, part dance, part live mythology, it’s a cultural tradition that has survived and thrived in the region, despite invasion, famine, British colonialism and attacks by Boko Haram. In Dambe’s lightning-fast bouts, against a hypnotic soundtrack of live drumming and improvised praise songs, conflicts erupt, rivalries are formed and legends are made.

Power, Profit and Populism: The Battle for Hard Brexit

On 1 January 2021, the UK took the final, definitive step of its Brexit process and left the EU’s customs union and single market. Even if the complete chaos of an exit without a connection agreement was prevented at the last minute, it is still a hard break between the UK and the EU. A hard Brexit, in other words – with restrictions on trade and services as well as economic losses in the billions that experts predict for both sides. In whose interest is that? The documentary follows the question of who the actors are who wanted a Hard Brexit at any price, and shows the means they used to pursue this goal. It is an investigative journey involving discreet London addresses, neoliberal think tanks and a party that is actually a company.

Love Needs Time to Kill

In the last decades, boarding schools of different religious orders have been closing down, and with them, an essential pedagogical system of education and identity has disappeared. As part of their pedagogical method, the schools had an herbarium and a large collection of stuffed animals from the Missions. This film connects identity with the diaspora of the Missions, and the forgotten pedagogical systems with the construction of the exotic and colonial imaginary.

Sous le Silence et la Terre

A participant in the Soirée de la relève in 2017, Gisela Restrepo returns to the RIDM with her first feature film, a work as political as it is personal. The filmmaker, named after her aunt who was reported missing in the 80s, revisits a family wound that never had the chance to heal. She makes the journey to Colombia, her parents’ homeland, searching for the remains of her aunt who fought in the civil war and whose story is shrouded in mystery. The journey sheds light on an emblematic woman, whom Gisela never had the chance to meet; meanwhile, the film shatters the silence that was forced on her family and on all those denied the possibility of burying their dead.
