The Peacekeepers

With unprecedented access to the UN Department of Peacekeeping, The Peacekeepers provides an intimate and dramatic portrait of the struggle to save "a failed state" The film follows the determined and often desperate maneuvers to avert another Rwandan disaster, this time in the Democratic Republic of Congo (the DRC). Focusing on the UN mission, the film cuts back and forth between the UN headquarters in New York and events on the ground in the DRC. We are with the peacekeepers in the "Crisis Room" as they balance the risk of loss of life on the ground with the enormous sums of money required from uncertain donor countries. We are with UN troops as the northeast Congo erupts and the future of the DRC, if not all of central Africa, hangs in the balance. In the background, but often impinging on peacekeeping decisions, are the painful memory of Rwanda, the worsening crisis in Iraq, global terrorism, and American hegemony in world affairs.

Missing Identity

During the late 1970s, a military dictatorship ruled Argentina with an iron fist. No political rights were granted to the general public, and the government implemented a plan to exterminate all opposition. Left-leaning citizens were detained and tortured in illegal detention centers with no official acknowledgement that these operations were being held. Between 1976 and 1983, the military regime was responsible for 30,000 disappeared persons. An estimate of 500 children were born in captivity and given illegally to adoptive parents, in many cases linked to the perpetrators of their parents’ murder. Although the children were not aware of their identity, their relatives were, especially their biological grandparents, who never gave up looking for them. This docudrama, adapted from a popular Argentine mini-series, explores these stories.

Decade for Decision

Short news featurette produced by Pathe-RKO after the Russians launched the first orbiting satellite, Sputnik. It is a patriotic 'call to arms' from the threat posed by this and the need for Americans to spend more on education in general and a college education in particular. A visit to the University of Buffalo highlights its science programs and the need for more graduates from all technical disciplines if America is to rise to the challenge. It bemoans the fact the PhDs earn less than a mechanic and the need to re-order priorities.

The Last First: Winter K2

The race to conquer mountaineering's last great trophy, K2 in winter, has claimed several lives. It has brought to light deep divisions within contemporary mountaineering: the pressure of commercialization, the damaging effects of social media, and latent tensions between marginalized climbers and those who have always profited from the sport's glory. The documentary filmmaker tells a complex, poignant, and moving story that deciphers the extreme mountaineering industry and the evolution of its culture. The story focuses on a 2021 expedition: Icelandic climbers John Snorri Sigurjónsson and Pakistani father-and-son duo Muhammad Ali and Sajid Sadpara set out to conquer K2 in winter. They quickly find themselves sharing this perilous ascent with influencers and their film crews, clients of commercial expeditions, and Nims, a renowned Nepalese mountaineer, and his team of Sherpas.
