D-Mark, Einheit, Vaterland: Das schwierige Erbe der Treuhand

1990. As part of the reunification process, the West takes charge of the harmonization project between the two territories. From the outset, all of East Germany's industrial assets were transferred to a public company, the "Treuhand," which operated for four years. This marked the beginning of a rapid privatization of the entire economy of the former GDR, comprising some 8,000 public companies employing around 4 million people who needed to be offered a new future. At the head of this gigantic public holding company, Birgit Breuel, a member of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), was the subject of both praise and criticism.

DDR vereist - Einsatz an der Winterfront

Uncleared roads, frozen pipes, district heating breakdowns: winter regularly posed problems for the GDR leadership. From the mid-1960s, the GDR leadership set up a central, state-organized winter service. Entire workforces were seconded from the factories to help their colleagues from the snow clearance service or VEB Stadtwirtschaft. But how did the population cope with the pitfalls and challenges of winter? How was the much-vaunted socialist community really experienced during collective snow shoveling? And what experiences from everyday life remain in our memories to this day?

Black Hole Legion

On the foothills of Uummannaq mountain, four cybergoth teens are fighting depression. Water contamination spreads throughout the village pipelines and one cybergoth finds herself laying on a hospital bed. The film is a visual poem narrated by a group of young inuit women, reflecting on ongoing suicide attempts and the separation from their families. The cybergoths remind us of a post-apocalypse future, that is to say, the apocalyptic qualities of the present; a fragile reality where national, communal, environmental, and mental stability is at risk.

Winter in den Schweizer Alpen

In winter, with ice and snow, it becomes uncomfortable in the Swiss Alps even for the animals. While marmots retreat to hibernate in the protective burrow, ibex, chamois, mountain hares and bearded vultures stay awake even in the cold season. These animals have developed special abilities to withstand the barren and adverse conditions at an altitude of up to 3000 meters. In the Swiss National Park in Graubünden, they remain undisturbed in winter. Park rangers and researchers are the only ones who are allowed to be out and about in the high mountain landscape even in winter.

The J. Street Project 2002-2005

The J. Street Project 2002–5 is a sixty-seven minute film that consists of a sequence of static camera shots of street signs in Germany that incorporate the word ‘Jude’ (German for ‘Jew’). Hiller found a total of 303 signs in streets, lanes, roads, avenues and alleys scattered throughout the country. The work focuses on the dissonance between these mundane, everyday signs and the memories they trigger of a genocidal history. The soundtrack records traffic noise, church bells and other incidental sounds. For this factual, indexical project Hiller maintained a neutral seriality in her approach. Cumulatively, however, it becomes clear that the signs are loaded with the memory of Jewish presence in the locations, not just from modern times but from thousands of years of history. The tension between past and present in the film highlights the sense of absence and traumatic loss. The place names operate as memorials of erasure.

Im Übergang – Protokoll einer Hoffnung

Once again Kurt Tetzlaff portrays Alexander, who in 1990 works as a nurse and is active in the “Action Reconciliation”. The sense of departure of the autumn of 1989 slowly gives way to disappointments about the outcome of the People’s Chamber elections in 1990, the currency reform and the Unification Treaty. The political and social changes took place at a rapid pace that many found hard to follow. The sense of community that carried people through 1989 is fading. “Now it’s every man for himself”, Alexander states. He has no use for capitalism: “I feel just as lied to and cheated as before.” Resignation spreads.

Norman Mailer, l'écrivain de tous les excès

He symbolized the USA - the dream and the nightmare. As a debuting writer, Norman Mailer was the “angry young man,” but he died as an angry old man and an icon of America. In between, life was like a roller coaster ride, marked by brilliant success and dark moments. Born in 1923 to Jewish immigrants, Mailer grew up in Brooklyn. The dominant figure in the family was his mother, whose father was a grocer and hotelier in the seaside town of Long Branch, New Jersey. Norman actually wanted to become an aircraft engineer, but took writing courses at Harvard College while studying.

About 1,200 visitors travelled from all over the GDR to witness a six hour programme on both evenings. It remains unclear to this day how many informers working for the Stasi were among them.

Battle of the Queens

Battle of the Queen is a film from and about rural Europe, capturing a timeless cultural event: a series of head-to-head fights of cows set in the valley in sunny Southern Switzerland, nestled amongst the Alps. The fights are sudden snorting seesaws, explosions of mass and muscle, archaic and wild spectacles. We follow three concurrent story lines: an anxious farmer with his beloved contender, a neurotic unemployed reporter from Zurich coming to find a story, and a gang of adolescent boys on mopeds trying to catch a pretty girl's eye. The festival is a balancing act between fascinating tradition and modernity. This black and white film serves as both an exciting visual treat and a long overdue documentation of a fascinating Swiss tradition.
