Horror in the Andes: Ayacuchean Cinema in the Making

Horror in the Andes is a behind-the-scenes documentary that follows the process of making a horror movie in Ayacucho, Peru. Directed by audio-visual anthropologist Martha-Cecilia Dietrich, it explores how Andean filmmakers use the horror genre as a means to revive stories of a pre-colonial past. Appropriating a global cinematic language to tell local (hi)stories, Horror in the Andes pays testament to the craft of filmmaking and its community.

Distant Mountains, Roaring Engines

Strange boy was a child picked up by guangbin when he was young. He was raised, but one day his biological parents found him and took him away. At that time, guangbin was not at home, and there was no address left, only a phone number left. Guangbin has since made a phone call to guangbin every few days, and there is only answering the phone, never replying. One day, he was reminded by the landlord that he met a strange poet who was also a doctor in the villagers' mind. The doctor told him many things he had never heard. He had more questions and seemed to be the answer. After the strange boy returned to the original family, the original family had been broken, and everyone gradually became more and more unfamiliar with him from the joy of his return, until they found the secret of their father, the emergence of the mysterious girl, and the chance encounter with the poet, with a sudden "eclipse Festival" breaking all plans.

Homo Urbanus Seoulianus

This work is a long-term research project developed until now in 10 different cities over the world: Seoul, Bogota, Naples, Saint-Petersburg, Rabat, Tokyo, Kyoto, Shanghai, Doha and Venice. Born as an artistic commission for the Agora Biennale in Bordeaux around the theme of the moving landscapes, these videos plunge into cities in a spontaneous and subjective approach with very modest means in order to translate in the closest possible way the feel of their constant moving nature: their human landscape. Presented in a comparative dynamic through the lens of a selection of themes and issues linked with the street daily life, the videos enable us to perceive each of these different urban contexts as an experimental, local and unique laboratory answering the same global challenge of how can we live all together.

Bearman of Hokkaido

Hokkaido Prefecture's Shiretoko Peninsula is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. The area includes one of the world's densest concentrations of wild brown bears. 84-year-old fisherman Ose Hatsusaburo has forged a remarkable relationship with these creatures over a lifetime of working among them. Bears obey his commands without a fuss, and no fisherman has suffered a bear attack in 50 years. A rapidly shifting climate and recent UNESCO directives mean this unique way of life now faces an uncertain future.

The Voices of the Harbor

The voices of the harbor are those of thousands of people that have worked there, and of those who still work there today. Like for all cities on the sea, Trieste's history is deeply interrelated with the history of its harbor. The human milieus of the harbor environment are at the foundation of the city, of how the community grew. To understand who we are today, and who we will be tomorrow, we need to reconstruct the memories that tell the story of the last century of the Trieste Harbor. The Harbor will always be there, and the transport of goods is still its main activity, but the ways in which the goods are transported have changed significantly, along with drastic cuts to the harbor's personnel.

easy to learn hard to forget

A travel diary composed from a series of video vignettes Rhody made while traveling in Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos for two months. Shot using a tiny, pocket sized digital camera. "I initially didn't intend to make a video from them or have them shown publicly. I was just making a diary of moments that I found graceful during the frequent downtime that occurs when traveling. My partner, Abigail Smith, created a large collection of field recordings during this same time, some of which were later published under the title "Indochina Soundscraps". And although the two projects stand-alone, I think they compliment each other in attitude and approach - which works well as a metaphor for our relationship."
