Shadowboxing

Shadowboxing builds on Abdi Osman’s ongoing research surrounding the gaps between experiences and representations of queer cruising, space-making, and place-making in the city of Toronto. A projection of lush green park environments documented by Osman from sites across the city appears. Osman’s holdings and records of queer, locational fortitude speak to the countless compounded sites around us where bodies have forged connections in time and space in spite of the continued realities of homophobia, racism, and white supremacy that exist in Toronto, and beyond. The projection is augmented by an online audio work that features oral histories about cruising from the perspectives and experiences of Black, queer, and trans community members, as recorded by the artist in the city.

Downfall

As lawmakers gathered to certify the election of Joe Biden, an angry mob encouraged by Donald Trump stormed the Capitol building, leading to the deaths of several people. Congressman Ruben Gallego describes the fear he felt as the rioters searched for lawmakers: 'In my opinion, there's nothing scarier than a white mob, especially in the United States'. The riot shocked many, including former members of the Trump administration. ‘None of us signed up for insurrection. We signed up for lower taxes and deregulation, and fewer involvements overseas... I think it's going to colour his legacy forever,’ says former White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney.

I experience conflict everytime I stand towards a landscape. I am always suspicious of the established relationship of seduction that takes into account the current acceleration of time through technology towards the body. An erotics of speed. While on location, I try to understand how these invisible relationships between history of speed, capital, libidinal economies, technological evolution, landscape photography and cinema in itself can create moments of disruption around terms like territory, land belonging, race and citizenship.

Look at Me

Authority, autonomy and one’s own complicity are elements in the transgressive situations that the artist Christian Falsnaes establishes in ‘Look at Me’, where he, in collaboration with the actress Minni Katrina Mertens, directs different groups of people at a night club, a gallery and an open-air festival. The boundary between subject and object – and between spectator and participant – is fleeting until you are finally invited on stage yourself. Throughout the entire proceedings, however, there is only one director. When Falsnaes and Mertens take turns to give both the others and each other instructions, it happens in an interplay where dominance and submission are the constants. ‘Look at Me’ embodies the kinds of soft and hard authority that we more or less consciously are subjected to everywhere in modern Western society, and it is made as both a documentary and a video work in its own right.

Peace Pilgrims

In September 2016 five ‘Peace Pilgrims’ trekked overnight through the central Australian bush into the secretive military facility Pine Gap, 18 kms east of Alice Springs. Their plan of action, according to the police recording of the interview, was to “pray for a miracle”. They were spotted by surveillance CCTV around 3.30 a.m. as they approached the ‘prohibited area’ and were arrested about an hour before sunrise. When the sun came up on September 29, 2016 Margaret Pestorius, Jim Dowling, Jim’s son Franz, Timothy Webb and Andy Paine were to be charged under the Defence (Special Undertakings) Act, a law originally designed to protect 1950s British atom bomb tests on Montebello Island, Emu Fields and Maralinga. They faced 7 years jail.

We Stitched Together All the Footage from the Capitol Riot

"This treatment of the insurrection recreates the attack moment by moment, tracking the protesters mounting agitation and rage, and some rioters breaking into various fronts of the U.S. Capitol, eventually marching the Confederate flag into the building and occupying the halls of Congress. It also reveals the diverse and competing ideologies that coalesced on Jan. 6: angry Trump voters marched alongside sovereign citizens, Three Percenters, Proud Boys, and Christian Nationalists. Some rioters demonstrated solidarity with the police as others brutally assaulted officers."
