Zwischen mir und der Welt / Aufräumen

Set theory, one of the cornerstones of mathematics, serves as a metaphor for “social structures as spatial arrangement”, as the first sequence of the film reveals. The visual playfulness first becomes an exploration of two- and three-dimensionality and then turns out to be a well-founded reflection of social power relations. The search for a supposedly correct “order of things” triggers the compulsive element in many viewers. Who’s (not) afraid of being different?

American Chimera

The documentary follows Honduran Dariella and Mirna in their quest for a better life in the United States. Fleeing the extortion of Honduran organized crime, the two women, along with their children and relatives, join the "Caravan of migrants" in November 2018. Originating in Honduras, the exodus gathers thousands of people who, on foot or by makeshift means, cross Central America in an attempt to reach Tijuana, Mexico, and from there cross the border with the USA. “American Chimera” does not just tell the difficulties of entering the United States. On the contrary, it goes beyond the wall. There, among detention centers for irregular immigrants and electronic bracelets, there is also Mrs. Vonnette, a wealthy Republican supporter and senior army officer, who wishes to help migrants by supporting them in their asylum requests and opening her front door to them.

Born, Unborn and Born Again

Born, Unborn and Born Again revolves around my struggle to embody the White Horse, a zodiac sign which occurs every 60-year cycle in East Asian Countries. This film explores the transnational nature of governmental control over reproductive systems, and how this oppression manifests in our bodies and perceptions of self. I use the structure of my mother tongue, Korean, and my second language, English, to contemplate ruptures, repetition of time, and violence against women. An untold history resurfaces in the present, and re-orients us towards the future.

Girl Is Presence

During the 2020 global pandemic, filmmaker Lynne Sachs and her daughter Noa collaborated with Anne Lesley Selcer to create Girl is Presence. The work is a form of reading and listening in response to disquieting words from Selcer’s poem “Sun Cycle.” The film’s disparate objects reflect a disharmonious and tense list of voiced nouns. The poem’s original tone, contextualized by a book that deals with gender and power, takes on an expanded sense here. Against the uncertain and anxious pandemic atmosphere, inside domestic space, the “girl” arranges and rearranges a collection of small and mysterious things. Commissioned by Small Press Traffic for Bay Area Shorts during the national shelter-in-place order caused by the Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020.

This film is the first of three planned on the present crisis. The next will look at the murder of George Floyd and the processes it has set in motion
