The People United

Boston, 1978: It was an intense period of racial conflict over school bussing and escalating incidents of police brutality in the predominantly Black section of Roxbury. In the wake of growing racial tension and violence, 12 black women were brutally and mysteriously murdered within an 18-month period; their murders remained unsolved. There are moments in the history of any community when its people are sorely tested and the floodgates break. This film captures one of those moments and the community's united response.

Jerusalem: Within These Walls

Jerusalem's Old City is a tiny enclave where some of history's greatest dramas have been enacted. Busy and colorful, it is the fountainhead of three major religions, the site of many of the world's most venerated shrines, and home to 26,000 people of profoundly different cultures who live side by side in a fragile peace. JERUSALEM: WITHIN THESE WALLS offers a kaleidoscopic view of the city and its people as they are today -- the remarkable outcome of 3,000 years of history, hope and faith.

The Mask

During the celebrations of the bicentenary of the French Revolution, Johan van der Keuken made a film about the revolutionary ideals of equality, liberty and fraternity. Rather than lingering on the festivities, he lingers on the crowds in the metro and on the platform. Amongst them is Philippe, a 23 year old, homeless and with no real job. More than just a comment on the ignorance and contradictions of France at the end of the 1980s, THE MASK is an exchange of views on solitude. Isn’t the question of violence in our democracies firstly that of the real price society pays for the image it would like to show?

Somewhere Between Jalostotitlan and Encarnacion

“The bus stopped on the Mexican highway, placing us in full view of a young boy, motionless, on the hot pavement. In this film, the incident is revealed through a poetic text, derived from my written journals. The poetry mixes primarily with Mexican streetscapes which compliment the text in a tonal sense. Most images are twenty-eight seconds long, the ‘breath’ of the 16mm Bolex camera. A lone saxophone (Mike Callich) weaves its way through the narrative, blending to make stronger the tomes and accentuations of the images.” (PH)

Deception Was My Job

Yuri Bezmenov, the son of a high-ranking Soviet officer, was a member of the elite propaganda arm of the KGB, known as the Novasti Press Agency. One of his assignments was to accompany journalists visiting the Soviet Union to make sure they did not discover the truth about Soviet life. After becoming disillusioned with the oppressive system, he escaped to the West at great risk to his life. In this interview, conducted by G. Edward Griffin, Mr. Bezmenov tells how the Soviets used propaganda against their own citizens; how he hoodwinked American journalists into publishing Soviet propaganda, how slave laborers are concealed from foreign visitors, and how he escaped to the West posing as an American hippie. Includes many photographs brought with him on microfilm at the time of his escape.

Mottenburg

In January 1985, a group of young people occupied the vacant factory premises at Mottenburger Straße 10 in Ottensen. They were defending themselves against the redevelopment of the »demolished district«, which would drive the old tenants into the »new housing clinks«. The squatters started to renovate, cook together and organize punk concerts. After barely two weeks, they are evicted by the police and the owner, who wants to build subsidized apartments on the site and has the buildings made uninhabitable – all documented on video by the Medienpädagogik Zentrum Hamburg (MPZ).

Television Interview

In Television Interview, a two channel video installation, we again meet Atherton as interviewer/inquisitor, haranguing the cast of the popular soap opera Coronation Street on the status of video art, the monodirectionality of broadcast television, and the disempowered status of the viewer/consumer. Whilst taking television to task for its condescending attitude toward its viewers, Atherton also takes a few swipes at video art, telling the hapless Coronation Street character who professes no knowledge of the medium that “you have to force yourself to watch video art”. Thematically and procedurally in this piece, the artist lays bare and discusses the construction of the media image, both in relation to televisions mode of representation, and video arts appropriation/deconstruction of these modes. Blending wry humour with sharp observation, Atherton succeeds in crystallising several of the themes that were central to the burgeoning field of video art at that time. – Jeremy Welsh

World Rally Championship Review 1987

From the snow-laden roads of Monte Carlo to the dusty tracks of Spain, the 1987 World Rally Championship provided entertainment to rival any previous race series. This DVD travels the full twelve rounds, with superb camerawork from the very heart of the action. Lancia were favourites but BMW, Mazda and Audi were intent on blocking runaway success for the Italian marque. Reigning champion Juha Kankkunen was the driver they all wanted to beat, but team orders demanded that on occasion he be 'allowed' to win. At other times Micki Biasion led as the HF4WDs were put into front running places. All of the flips, dips and hard-core dirt road action is captured during the battle for finish line honours. Not until the very last round of the RAC Rally could the champion be guessed at, in what turned into a thrilling season finale.

Safari Rally 1986

Always one of the toughest events in the World Rally Championship, the 1986 Safari Rally lived up to character. A field of 76 set off from Nairobi, including defending champion Juha Kankkunen of Finland (Peugeot 205) and twice former Safari winner Bjorn Waldegaard of Sweden (Toyota Celica Turbo). As this video forcibly demonstrates, the terrain of the 2,600 mile event provided a severe challenge, taking crews first to the south-east of Kenya, including the night-drive through the Taita Hills. Marku Alen in the Lancia showed that his vivid style is not restricted to tarmac road events, while Lars-Eric Torph (Sweden) provided admirable back-up to Waldegaard. The punishing heat, strength-sapping sand and grass lanes and dunes tested the world championship aspirants to the limit, and it's here on this film waiting to be seen and re-seen.
