The Moviemakers: Spielberg

"With over 50 years in the industry, not many filmmakers can boast the longevity and influence of Steven Spielberg, whose journey from the suburbs of Arizona to the spotlight of Hollywood is one of the greatest stories ever told. From the birth of the blockbuster era in the 1970s, through the emergence of visual effects in the 1990s, and even today, in a cinematic world dominated by superheroes and streaming services, Spielberg has left fingerprints across film history. With so many citing his movies as influences, whether they're in the audience, or pursuing their own journey into film, his impact on cinema is unmatched. The influence of Spielberg stems from his ability to span genres and generations, from E.T. to Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan to Ready Player One, telling the stories of ordinary people dealing with extraordinary circumstances. But his own journey from growing up in post-war America to changing cinema forever might just be his most extraordinary tale."

Shellmound

“Shellmound” is the story of how one location was transformed from a sacred center of pre-historic cultures to a commercial mecca for modern people. What began as a Native American burial ground three thousand years ago, was transformed first into an amusement park, and later an industrial age paint factory. Now, the tainted ancient soil sits beneath the glittering lights of Banana Republic, Victoria’s Secret, and the AMC movie theaters. “Shellmound” examines the decisions made during the recent toxic cleanup, excavation, and construction of the Bay Street mall through the eyes of the city of Emeryville, the developer, the archaeologists, and the native Californians who worked on the site.

John Baldessari: An Interview

From his photo-text canvases in the 1960s to his video works in the 1970s to his installations in the 1980s, John Baldessari’s (b.1931) varied work has been seminal in the field of conceptual art. Integrating semiology and mass media imagery, he employed such strategies as appropriation, deconstruction, decontextualization, sequentiality, and text/image juxtaposition. With an ironic wit, Baldessari's work considers the gathering, sorting, and reorganizing of information. “Something that is part of my personality is seeing the world slightly askew. It’s a perceptual stance. The real world is absurd sometimes, so I don’t make a conscious attempt, but because I come at it in a certain way, it seems really strange,” Baldessari says in this interview with Nancy Bowen. A historical interview originally recorded in 1979 and re-edited in 2003 with support from the Lyn Blumenthal Memorial Fund.
