ENGINEERING EARTH: Sci-Fi Solutions to Earth's Problems

Mankind has become the pilot of spaceship earth, whether we like it or not. Half of all habitable land on earth is now dedicated to supporting human activity. And as of the year 2020, the mass of all man-made materials now outweighs the mass of all life forms on earth. Despite all this, we are still newcomers – untrained pilots steering an ancient, ever-changing planet. If we want to survive long-term and continue to grow, we will have to make bigger technological leaps than ever before. This film explores the wildest, most ambitious, most dangerous ideas to keep Earth and humanity thriving, by protecting each of its layers – from the lithosphere to the stratosphere. Many of our ideas may never materialize, but by dreaming them up, we can open our minds to the full potential of human willpower and intellect. The future is ours to build.

Abbas Kiarostami: A Transversal Filmography

'Abbas Kiarostami: a transversal filmography' is a video essay on the relationship between the different child and adolescent characters in the Iranian director's various films. What is proposed is a parallel montage, based on the raccord of delayed apprehension between the seven films used. In this way, we perceive the sensation of a single character progressing in a linear fashion through Kiarostami's different films. In which the work opaques the entire growth stage of the youngsters, passing from childhood to old age in the blink of an eye.

Cotton is the Clouds in the Sky

Around the year 2000 AD, it was reported in the news that about two million cotton pickers rush to the vast land of Xinjiang every year, just like migratory birds, arriving in September and leaving in November. With curiosity, I also joined this "migratory bird" team and headed straight to the Xinjiang farm thousands of miles away. The train was very crowded, and among the cotton pickers who were mostly female workers, the vast and beautiful Xinjiang surprised these "migratory birds" for the first time. The hardships and joy in Xinjiang's cotton fields were also their first experiences. This film is the memory of me joining the migratory bird team as a cotton picker.

America's Stairway

The epic story of how one of America’s first successful public works emboldened a nation to move westward. The film places the historic Flight of Five locks on the Erie Canal in Lockport, New York, squarely in the American narrative as a symbol of a young and developing nation. The Lockport Locks were regarded as a modern engineering marvel at the time that the Erie Canal was originally opened in 1825. They enabled water-borne commerce and passengers to travel from New York City to the Great Lakes via the Hudson River and the man-made inland waterway system, opening up the Midwest to development.

Time Mechanics

Arturo Palacios, a BMW specialist mechanic, has dedicated more than 50 years to repairing cars, driven by a deep love for mechanics that has made him a reference in his trade. However, the weight of his workshop responsibilities is seriously affecting his health. Arturo faces a crucial decision: to leave mechanics behind to care for his health, or continue working to support his family financially. Through his story, the documentary explores how Arturo’s physical and emotional wear mirrors that of the cars he repairs, and how a life devoted to his passion can become unsustainable when demands and responsibilities exceed all limits. Yet, Arturo’s continued presence in the workshop is not only due to economic necessities, but also the difficulty of parting from a world that has been with him his whole life, and a profound longing to see all his children become professionals.

As I Lay Dying

We see footage of the Green Movement, a wave of protests in Iran that began in the summer of 2009, in response to the presidential election fraud in favor of the incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. We see the chaos, the solidarity among the people, and the amazement too: that this is possible, that this is actually happening. Shaky handheld images capture both the energy of the crowd and the panic when shots suddenly ring out. Meanwhile, a voice-over calmly recounts what happened to the people we see.

The Disappearance of Dr. Abu Safiya

For more than two decades, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya served as a pediatrician in northern Gaza, rising to lead Kamal Adwan Hospital. Though he had many chances to leave, he chose to stay with his patients even as Israeli attacks escalated. With each passing month, the toll deepened. His son was killed, his hospital repeatedly struck, and his life threatened. Still, he remained at Kamal Adwan. His resilience was captured in a 10-second video: a lone pediatrician in a white coat walking through rubble toward Israeli forces. To the world, it symbolized defiance. To his family and colleagues, it reflected who he always was. Through firsthand testimony, archival footage, and on-the-ground reporting, Fault Lines investigates the assault on Kamal Adwan Hospital, the raid that led to Dr. Abu Safiya’s unlawful detention, and the broader targeting of Gaza’s healthcare system.
