River City Drumbeat

For 30 years, Ed “Nardie” White has dedicated his life to uplifting and empowering African-American youth through the River City Drum Corps, teaching kids about their African roots and culture through music. Filmmakers Marlon Johnson and Anne Flatté spent years in Louisville, KY, filming the charismatic founder and the many children he inspired. As he prepares to pass the torch to his successor and former student Albert, Nardie also reflects on the triumphs and bittersweet losses of the past three decades. Flint: The Poisoning of an American City

100,000 people have been poisoned by lead, a lifelong affliction, yet somehow this shocking event has been normalized in the US. "Flint: The Poisoning of an American City" gives voice to the current struggle of city residents and follows the environmental history of the river and how the continued abuse and neglect of city infrastructure and environmental regulations have led to the poisoning of a city. Flint explores the critical question of how this could happen in America, and how this event should serve as a warning for the rest of the country. A recent report found that 5,300 American cities were found to be in violation of federal lead rules, and research published in USA Today detected excessive lead in nearly 2,000 public water systems across all 50 states. This documentary educates but also enrages and seeks to radically change how we view and value water.

Jozi Gold

Jozi Gold exposes Johannesburg mines to not be so golden after all. It paints a grim environmental and political picture of South Africa’s abandoned mines which are in disarray, with toxicity levels that are harming communities. The documentary follows Mariette Liefferink, an advisory committee member of the South African Human Rights Commission, as she tries to pressure government and mining companies to confront and fix what they’re responsible for and continue to let occur – acid mine drainage, contamination of cattle and human health, radioactive land and not informing the public of these risks. Her efforts reveal many mining companies’ indifference to the lives they’ve affected while contrasting with the ordinary South Africans who are desperately trying to make a difference- but as Mariette says, “The wheels of justice turn slow.”

Women Behind The Plow

"Women Behind The Plow tells the compelling stories of the determined and indefatigable women who settled the North Dakota prairie and of the new generations, ages 15 to 92, who continue to work on the farm. These women embody the German-Russian expression "Arbeit macht das Leben süß" ... "Work makes life sweet." The 60-minute documentary is based in part on the book "Women Behind The Plow," written and edited by Sue B. Balcom, which honors the contributions of women who worked in the fields and raised families in a time before electricity. It is the tenth in a series of award-winning documentaries produced by Prairie Public and the NDSU Libraries' Germans From Russia Heritage Collection. The women featured have roots in German-Russian country, an area in south-central North Dakota comprising of Emmons, Logan, and McIntosh counties. It's an area strong on agriculture but even stronger on heritage and stories." From https://www.prairiepublic.org/television/women-behind-the-plow/

Uncle Geza goes on a trip to Ukraine following the footsteps of his beloved grandfather Peter Kutos, who fought on the Austro-Hungarian side against the Russians during the First World War.
