Tour de Corse 1984

The Tour de Corse 1984 review brings you the full story of round five of the 1984 world championship, as the island of Corsica hosted the French rally. Amazingly, this event was the debut for two cars which would become sporting icons; the fire-spitting Group B Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 (T16) and the legendary Audi sport Quattro. The Tour de Corse is an all-asphalt rally, and the stages include narrow mountain roads with huge drops just inches away – it is always a true challenge of skill and bravery, and the 1984 running was no exception. Alongside the new cars from Peugeot and Audi, the field included the dominant Lancias and Renault 5 Turbos. The all-star driving cast includes Markku alen, Mikki Biasion, Stig Blomqvist, Walter Rohrl, Ari Vatanen. It proved an incredible debut for both Peugeot and Audi, and an unpredictable battle throughout – including the unlikely alliance between the French and Italians against the rising threat of the Germans.

Olympus Rally 1986

Two drivers were still capable of securing the World Rally Drivers’ Championship as the 1986 series was wound up in the United States of America. Juha Kankkunen (Peugeot) and Markku Alen (Lancia) battled it out through the forests of Washington State with scarcely a thought that the issue would really be decided by an FISA court later in the month. That situation was reached after Peugeot protested against their exclusion from the San Remo event in Italy, which significantly affected the points score. However, as the cameras show to great advantage, the action on the Olympus Rally was fast and furious, with local star John Buffum going really well in a semi-official works Audi Quattro and providing substantial opposition to the big two. But all eyes were on the Flying Finns as they ignored the political wrangles and got on with the driving. Hurtling along the smooth wooded straights and screaming round the curves, the French and Italian manufacturers top men tried all they knew.

In Love and Anger: Milton Acorn - Poet

This feature documentary profiles poet Milton Acorn, who left his home in Prince Edward Island in the late 1940s to earn his living as an itinerant carpenter, and wound up in Toronto as one of Canada's most highly regarded poets and one of its most outrageous literary figures. Dubbed "The People's Poet" by fellow poets, he won the Governor General's Literary Award in 1975. Burned out by personal crises, Acorn moved back to Charlottetown in 1981. This film, directed by a P.E.I. filmmaker, brings out Acorn's wit, love of nature, unorthodox political views, and sometimes infuriating personal contradictions.

Kalyian

Kalyian was inspired by the blind princess from the island of Samar, a freedom fighter and the founder of Kali, a Philippine martial art. Kalyian is a modern-day personification of the female warrior spirit. It depicts the timeless battle of women, whose inherent warrior qualities are first fought, then realized, and eventually developed into harmony with the total self. It is the same force that gives women of this nature the strength to survive and succeed. Kalyian depicts both a primordial and futuristic sensibility, combining broadcast post-production effects with techniques drawn from Kabuki Theater, dance and Kali.

The Feast in Dream Village

The eastern Indonesian island of Sumba is the last island in the Malay archipelago where the majority of the people still follow their ancestral religion, called marapu. This film, shot in 1986, focuses on a challenge to the authority of the spirits and ancestors in a village ritual to restore fertility after a fire and famine. Narrated by the priests who communicate with the spirits in prayers and sacrifices, it documents a week of offerings, dancing and oratory in "Dream Village" in the western Kodi district. The name comes from a dream of prosperity the village founder once had, and dreams are also the ways in which priests are called to serve the spirits.
