How I Spent My Summer Holidays

Each of us has written this essay at some point. It happens every September 1st, yet somehow it always catches you off guard. Do children from different parts of Ukraine feel life differently or, on the contrary, similarly? What do they have in common, and what sets them apart? We are used to hearing stories about «vacations by the sea», «bike rides», and «sports victories». But what will teenagers in modern Ukraine tell us? Will their lives look somehow different? Or is even the war unable to cancel their youth and passion for life, emotions, and adventures?

The Hundred Squares, the Blooming Equalities

The Hundred Squares: "No more delays," the cry of citizens echoes from the lives of those barely holding out against discrimination and hatred. Struggling with diverse identities in their daily lives, citizens reflect on the meaning of "discrimination" through their own experiences and testimonies. They question and reflect on what is needed to eliminate it and speak out before the camera. The Blooming Equalities: discrimination law that has been on hold for 20 years. A lawyer, a researcher, a religious figure, a writer, and an activist stand in the square again after a year, and, in this time of rampant right-wing extremism and hate, they speak of an anti-discrimination law as "the right answer to ending the insurrection, the last line of defense for human dignity, a current that can no longer be held back, a square that cannot at all harm families, churches, and the nation, and a place where the voices of the less fortunate can be heard."

Patagonien - Land der Pioniere

Patagonia is one of the most fascinating and at the same time toughest places on our planet. The region at the tip of South America offers a landscape of extremes, as the ice masses of Patagonia are among the thickest on earth. Anyone who lives here has to brave the cold and the constant wind. Paulina Escobar proves that living in harmony with nature can be attractive. The fashion designer lives in Puerto Natales and processes Merino wool from traditional sheep farms into handmade regional products. The connection to the nature and culture of Patagonia is particularly important to her. On behalf of the Rewilding Chile Foundation, Arcilio Sepúlveda sets out to find the largest cat in South America, the puma.

Eyes of the Machine

Should she ever see her husband and family again, she would ask them for forgiveness, says Kalbinur Sidik with sorrow in her eyes. The price she has paid for speaking the truth about China's persecution of the Uyghurs in East Turkestan (Xinjiang) is immense. But she cannot remain silent. As a woman of Uzbek heritage who grew up in the Uyghur community, she has seen with her own eyes the methods used by the Chinese state to extirpate the Uyghur population. Her recollections of dehumanizing internment camps are interwoven with monotonous state propaganda describing "training centers" where extremist ideas are "eradicated." State control extends into the private realm too, through a program obligating families to host party members at home.
