The Village Resists

What happens when your land is being claimed as event zone for the two biggest sport events of the planet? A question that applies to the multi-ethnic urban Indigenous community of Aldeia Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as they face increased pressure ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The Indigenous group lives right next to the sport stadium that stages the finals of both sport events. They wish to maintain their land as an Indigenous meeting place, like it has been since the early 20th century, but that does not correspond with the plans of the Brazilian authorities and the corporations coming with the sport events. From within the Indigenous settlement, the film explores how the arrival of the sport events is being experienced, how the pressure rises and how the community resists.

MONTAGE 11

MONTAGE 11 FAST FORWARD REWIND is a palindrome video. The streets of the city of São Paulo mix with the streets of Rome and the past of my ancestors: Italians immigrants in Brazil. The camera goes around the ancient "House of the Immigrants" in the borough of Bras and mix with photos, memories, people, suggestions of the past and the present reality of São Paulo. The peculiar thing about this video was that the music was composed at the same time that the editing was made seeking for a perfect balance between sound and image. It has not been released in public yet.

Public Hearing (?)

The movie is about the incapacity of public authorities to truly accept the popular participation in decisions about the future of the city. By organizing the discussion on the use of a huge piece of land in the historic center of Recife - José Estelita Pier - based on the interests of the real estate speculation, the City Hall eliminates the possibility of debate. The "Public Hearings" become stage games, with the purpose of legitimizing the aspirations of the "Novo Recife" consortium.
