Before Time/After Time

Before Time/After Time takes the audience on a journey through the lives of nine returned citizens. They share with us fragments of their lives before and after incarceration. These fragments explore turning points in the lives of our collaborators, beginning in childhood, that, when viewed from the perspective of the present, create a direct line to the events that lead to system involvement. Other segments of our piece make evident the remorse felt by those who have done harm and the redemption they seek. The piece delves into the challenges of “coming home” and the effort it takes to survive “on the outside.” The piece is a tribute to the resilience, compassion, and generosity of those whose stories make up the devised text. And finally, the piece, and the process that created it, is an example of the kinds of communities that the arts can create at almost any age—communities where self-realization, shared goals and transformation are made possible.

TikTok, l'ombre chinoise

TikTok, the most popular app among young people, has nearly 1.6 billion users worldwide, including almost one in three French citizens. Often seen as a platform for dances, animals, music, and star influencers, it is above all a global success story from China, owned by the company ByteDance. Its content management system remains opaque, even to its moderators. Accused of collecting personal data like other social networks, TikTok is also suspected of sharing that data with the Chinese government and influencing public opinion worldwide.

PROTOCOL3500

Since 2019, we have been sending small groups of volunteers from all professions to settle in the most isolated corners of the planet. Whether in the inhospitable mountains of Kamchatka or the vast Bavarian forests, these participants—outfitted by the Foundation—must continue to fulfill the duties of their urban jobs while simultaneously attending to bivouac maintenance and food gathering, following the procedures set out in their training. A perfect embodiment of the term “digital nomads,” remote work here is taken to its extreme, propelling research on reintegrating humanity into the natural biome and our compatibility with it—in other words, on the “terraforming” of humankind.
