The Cannons

For over 40 years, legendary coach Neal Henderson has touched the lives of young people in the Washington, DC area through his youth team, the Fort Dupont Hockey Cannons. Founded to provide inner-city kids the opportunity to play organized hockey, the Cannons are the longest running minority-led hockey program in the country. As Henderson looks to solidify the future of the club, a new crop of teenage players struggles to understand if this game is really meant for boys like them.

No Tenemos Miedo

October 18, 2019, Santiago, Chile. An increase in the price of public transportation sparks an unexpected riot. Popular anger explodes, rooted in decades of discontent as a result of a savage neoliberal system that has deprived people of the most essential services, in a country that has never returned to true democracy thirty years after the end of Pinochet's dictatorship. Since the first days of the rebellion, we begin to hear about a new urban legend, the Primera Linea, a spontaneous security service that defends protesters. Scenes of protest and urban guerrilla warfare cross the streets and squares in the country. The people crowd the famous Plaza Italia, the zero zone of Chilean demonstrations, now renamed Plaza de la Dignidad (Dignity Square). The repression by the Chilean police is brutal.

Roof of Leaves

Constantin, Sarah and Gregor live in a polyamorous relationship. Their intimate confession is not just a demonstration of a free relationship between three people. The lovers, who have intimate conversations, sing, tease each other, or remain silent together, give a glimpse into the life of a social unit that takes questions of trust and tolerance to extremes. A polyamorous relationship can sometimes be even more solid than a couple because it goes beyond the familiar. It represents an experimental space where safe boundaries are abandoned and a gateway is opened to a frighteningly unrestrained universe where established patterns of behavior do not apply. It is a chance to free oneself from inner demons and be renewed within. To find ourselves, we must first lose ourselves.

Through the Rift

The relationship between the information we retain and its imagery we mentally re-envision and reassemble, helps us conceptualize imperceptible events such as the slow moving catastrophe of climate change. Recalling Robert Jay Lifton's concept of fragmentary awareness, we form surreal sequences from these visual thoughts in order to create our own narratives of the real events that are difficult to comprehend. In this video, natural imagery unfolds into a surreal cycle of destruction, death, and rebirth. The fragmented footage, taken from three coastlines in the United States, is edited into new forms - accentuating nature's close interplay with itself and us. The soundtrack, taken from the ambient sound of the source footage, is manipulated and layered with synth drones - reinforcing the intense and uncanny relationship between memory and reality.

A Man Captured by Drugs: The Story of an Addicted Soul

Who is a drug addict? Criminal? Dangerous sick person? Or a hero fighting the worst enemy? It is customary to treat drug addicts as the scum of society, unnecessary and superfluous. But it's not just weak people who start using drugs. Very often, especially in childhood, drugs appear in life as a tool of socialization. Using the example of a personal story of one person, the author tells how people in Russia treat drug addicts, what stereotypes they have to face, whether they manage to start a new life and whether there is a share of responsibility of each of us in the problem of drug addiction.

Alive

A moving and joyful time capsule, Alive introduces opera singer Marilyn Minns, showing some facets of her present condition before delving into her past. Suffering from Alzheimer’s, her memories are increasingly fragmented. Archive photography of Minn’s childhood is narrated using a 2014 interview, in which she talks about her childhood singing, and about her brief stint in the band Jokers Wild (whose lead singer, David Gilmour, would go on to form Pink Floyd). Weaving between the past and present, Alive introduces the man who will become her husband, a disgruntled lover, notable performances she took part in, and documentation of the mobility that her musicality awarded her. Following the shared reading of a letter – in which she outlines an episode in her life that she refers to as “the Russian saga” – Marilyn surmises the roles family, friends, passion, and love have played in her life, landing the film with a trailing air of hope.

Before we part ways and we will soon be living on different continents, we decide to go on a great journey together. Just the two of us.
