Vrankrix and the Amsterdam EURnrichment

A movie that dives deeply into the stronghold of Vrankrijk; an underground scene of anarchists and activists in downtown Amsterdam. Vrankrix not only houses a colorful group of residents but is also a meeting point for international activists with radical ideas. Hiphop, punk, queer, anarchists, sharing economy, veganism, globalization: it all comes together in this micro cosmos. The comic book of Asterix and the Mansions of the Gods has served as a source of inspiration the mere existence of a small Gallic village becomes jeopardized by the Roman high-rise construction of hotels, playgrounds and tourists.

Lyz Parayzo Artist of The End of The World

The independent work accompanies the beginning of the artistic trajectory of Lyz Parayzo, a visual artist who, through his works and performances, puts into question the space of art in a non-binary body coming from the periphery. Lyz, has the body as the main work support and her daily performance as a research platform revealing the mismatch between what is said, what is done, discourse and practice. For the lack of authorization, for the intrusion, for the unwanted inclusion, questioning the free school that does not allow to be freed, the art gallery that does not include the non-salable, the institutional space that assimilates the transgression since it has already been incorporated by the system.

Everything Under Heaven

Everything Under Heaven is a short documentary looking at the continued proliferation of antagonisms between global powers, the threat of global - even nuclear - war, and the crisis of imperialist capitalism. Building upon the analysis put forward in our 2018 documentary, History is Marching, and our 2019 short film, An Atlantic Tide, it covers the US-China trade war, the "phase one" US-China deal, Hong Kong, the politicisation of the coronavirus, conflicts between the EU imperialist bloc and the US, Brexit, the resurgence of a Turkish colonialism, the US dollar and oil, and the US' push toward drastic escalation in the Middle-East. They are in free fall. We are the solution.

Lost in the Woods

From 1984 to 1989, Costantinos Pittas took a solo journey across Europe and he shot 30,000 black-and-white photographs with a Minox 35mm compact camera. His aim was to capture the human core of the people living on both sides of Europe’s Iron Curtain. His last picture was taken in Berlin, a day after the Wall came down. As he was motivated by the dream for a united Europe, he thought that his project made no sense after the end of the Cold War. He stashed the negatives away in a box and forgot about them. For a good 25 years…

Equinox

Equinox is the scientific term for the time when day and night astronomically are in an equal length anywhere on earth. It takes place every year in September and March respectively. For astronomers, the March equinox in the northern hemisphere signifies the beginning of a new spring. Clara Busch's abstract video piece, the shortest work at this year's festival, marks the changing times in its own concise and suggestive way. Organic forms that at a closer look turn out to be of an indefinite and artificial nature, present themselves to us in a digital universe in which we are fully immersed for the four minutes this very special equinox lasts.

Dirty Streaming The Internets Big Secret

With the launch of streaming services from Disney and Apple, the rollout of 5G and the growth in cryptocurrencies, experts are warning about the impact this huge rise in data use could have on the environment. There are now hundreds of thousands of data centres around the world, storing everything from viral videos to doctors’ notes and even bank account details. Many of them run on electricity generated by burning fossil fuels. Film and TV writer Beth Webb went in search of the internet and discovered that ‘the cloud’ is actually a vast network of energy-guzzling data centres and undersea cables.

Edo Avant-Garde

Edo Avant-Garde reveals the pivotal role Japanese artists of the Edo era (1603 – 1868) played in setting the stage for the “modern art” movement in the West. During the Edo era, while a pacified Japan isolated itself from the world, audacious Japanese artists innovated stylization, abstraction, minimalism, surrealism, geometric composition and the illusion of 3-D. Their elegant originality is most striking in images of the natural world depicted on folding screens and scrolls by Sotatsu, Korin, Okyo, Rosetsu, Shohaku and many others who left their art unsigned.
