One-Way Street

Erez Pery, an Israeli filmmaker living in downtown Manhattan, observes the street below from his apartment window while making some cinematic experiments. A fixed camera records from a low floor of a building the passage of passersby at different climatic moments, until leading to a more complex story where the documentary eye turns to the language of (science) fiction. All stimulated by the off-screen sounds of “War of the Worlds”, the famous radio drama by Orson Welles from 1938 that affected its listeners with mass hysteria, believing Martians were attacking earth. The effect of that famous broadcast, combined with seemingly everyday situations and reinforced by suggestive ambient music, provoke a fascination that shatters the naturalistic atmosphere of the initial proposal.

Ancient Aliens and Jesuits

Is God an alien being from another planet? This is a question that has been puzzling mankind ever since Erich von Daniken popularized the Ancient Astronaut theory. Undeniably showing proof of aliens and high technology in ancient times von Daniken has shifted the perception of the God described in scripture to an extraterrestrial being. But is that really the case? Is “God” the creator of the universe or just an alien pretender using high technology to confuse mankind? Is there ancient scripture that would settle this argument and once and for all reveal not only the true identity of God but of the alien beings as well? And is von Daniken’s concept his own or are there dark powers at work?

Psychic Meat

"The film is a diary and act of bearing witness in which Wardell tells of his father's artificial heart valve, the industrial farming industry that both provided the tissue for it and arguably hastened its necessity, and their somewhat distant father-son relationship. Wardell hand-developed this film in salt which resulted in a shimmering pock-marked effect on the celluloid which emphasises the film's own materiality and physical precarity in line with the earthbound fleshiness of the maker's voiceover narrative. However, the salt’s implications as a curing agent for meat and the way its visual impact brings together threads of preservation – of his father's life, of their mutual love, of the detachment they have felt for years – and the latent imagery of these things hanging and curing over time, becomes quietly overwhelming." - Ben Nicholson, Alt/Kino
