The game “Mosquito of Pachacútec” refers to the historical metaphor of how the Inca Empire was challenged in its territorial conquests by a tiny adversary: the mosquito. These seemingly insignificant insects hindered the expansion of the Inca Pachacútec empire in the mid-15th century, particularly in coastal areas, where malaria-carrying mosquitoes formed a natural barrier for the Inca armies. The players form a circle. One player throws an imaginary mosquito into the air, shouting, “The Pachacútec mosquito is going this way!” The following players try to kill the mosquito by clapping their hands in the air. After a couple of rounds, another imaginary mosquito is released, then a third, until the chain breaks and the round collapses in a fit of laughter.

In 2016, Canada became one of a handful of countries in the world to offer Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) to terminally ill patients. Since 2021, the Canadian government has been planning to further extend MAiD to people whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental disorder. It became one of the most toxic and contentious debates in Canadian medical and parliamentary history, and highlighted a striking lack of compassion, empathy and understanding towards people who have been suffering from profound mental anguish for decades. NO WAY TO DIE follows two deeply mentally ill individuals, Jane Hunter and Savannah Meadows, both of whom had been planning to apply for MAiD, watching in sadness, anger and torment as a phalanx of opponents launch a ferocious (and often misleading) effort to halt the government's plan to offer relief to people like them-people who are out of resiliency and out of options.

What kind of garden unfurls at the world’s northernmost settlement, sitting 78 degrees north and seeing temperatures drop below -27ºC? How can plants survive the long winter when the sea, land and sky are covered with heavy snow and the sun has not risen for months? A garden in the Arctic – is it an unobtainable dream or a worthwhile pursuit? By observing, meditating and imagining, ‘Arctic Garden’ journeys through a world where ‘one shade melts into the other’ and seeks a utopian garden where ‘they are all there’: a place where there are no boundaries of space and time (Fridtjof Nansen, Farthest North, 1897).
