Chile: The Longest Descent - Part 1 - The Highest Volcano

It's a crazy plan: to ride down the world’s longest descent from the roof of the Andes at 6890m to the Pacific coast of Chile - 300Km in all. But to even get to the start line, James Lowsley-Williams & Mark Beaumont need to scale the world's highest active volcano, Ojos del Salado with their bikes strapped to their backs. To make the start line they must acclimatise to the crushing altitude and the barren landscape before their attempt begins. Mark and James have nailed several epic rides in the past, but this latest attempt moves them into a different league, with extreme altitude and barren inhospitable landscapes challenging them before they can even begin.

The Devil’s Instrument

An exploration of explores the history, lore, craft and haunting music of the Hardanger fiddle and the dances that accompany it as they are practiced in present day Norway. The national instrument of Norway, the Hardanger fiddle is similar to the violin, though it has eight strings, four of which resonate as drone strings. The instrument is often highly decorated with an extensive mother of pearl inlay on the fingerboard and black ink decorations on the body of the instrument. “The Devil’s Instrument” was the name given to the fiddle by religious leaders in the 19th century to discourage its use. The documentary interviews woodworkers who make the fiddle, the musicians who play it and the dancers who spin to it against the backdrop of the gorgeous Norwegian landscape.

Bite of the Century: Fishing El Niño's Best

Running out of Hilgrem’s Sportfishing in Oceanside, we jumped onboard the beautiful Oceanside 95 for a run out to San Clemente Island in search of the exotics. This overnight trip proved to be very productive as patience and light line paid off on the slow drift and long soaks for the bluefin tuna. With sea temps reaching 76 degrees (about 8 degrees) warmer than normal for the offshore Southern California bight, the fish were there in numbers but for the most part reluctant to take a bait with a hook in it.
