The Game

The speed chess tournament that has taken place once in a month for already 35 years involves well-known people from the field of culture. The game has no other purposes than the game itself. Some hobbies may seem funny for bystanders; however, for the practitioners of a hobby it may be even more serious activity than their main occupation. Work is compulsion, game is freedom. The documentary is a document of cultural history that has recorded well-known people in a situation that is unfamiliar for the public.

In the Evenings, After the Accomplishments

On the eve of 1987, the metallurgists of Magnitogorsk reported an industry record - sixteen million tons of steel were smelted. However, New Year's Eve at the plant became tragic. The blast furnace, which was working hard, could not stand it. One of the air heaters collapsed. People died. This is one of the examples that allowed the authors of the film to raise a serious problem - focusing on quantitative indicators at the expense of qualitative ones, leading to harmful consequences in the economy and society.

Safari Rally 1988

For the Lancia Martini team, the 1988 Safari Rally was the chance to win the classic African event for the first time since their involvement in World Championship rallying. The Italian team had prepared thoroughly for their tenth attempt to win this round, with a tortuous 4,200 kilometres lying waiting to catch the unwary. Leading into it was championship hot-man Miki Biasion, with the Lancia Martini Integrale sporting a six-speed gearbox for the first time. Nissan and Toyota were expected to provide the main opposition to the Lancias, with Biasion anxious to extend his lead over team-mates Cesare Fiorio and Markku Alen, with Stig Blomqvist lurking menacingly in the Ford.

World Rally Championship Review 1985

The year 1985 saw some of the biggest investments ever in rallysport from several of the world's leading manufacturers. Audi Quattros - the first of the 'supercars', Peugeot with their new 4WD lightweight flyer and Lancia with the effective Delta S4. This action packed record includes Ari Vatanen's authoritative win in Sweden, the thrilling debut of the new Metro in the hands of Tony Pond at the RAC and the spectator packed tracks of Portugal and Greece. There's also the open plains of Africa, the yumps of the 1000 Lakes and the slick-tyred tarmac racing in San Remo. It is all here, filmed to a very high standard often from within inches of the cars as they hurtle past.

Veronica Four Rose

Made with young lesbians aged between 16 and 23 from Newcastle, Liverpool and London, this warm and engaging film explores the ups and downs of being lesbian in a predominately heterosexual and homophobic society geared to wedding bells and boys. The young women interviewed speak openly about their experiences of coming out to friends and parents and how in many cases they were told it was only a ‘phase’ they would grow out of. ‘If you can go out with boys at 14 and that’s OK, why can’t you go out with someone of your own sex without it being a crush’ asks one of the young women.

Rally de Portugal 1989

Round 3 of the 1989 World Rally Championship took place over the combined gravel and asphalt stages in Portugal. Joint championship leader and reigning world champion, Miki Biasion again led the Italian marque's entry. Able support came from Portuguese specialist, Markku Alen, and the dynamic Frenchman Didier Auriol. Alex Fiorio was also entered in an Integrale. The other joint leader, Ingvar Carlsson was absent, Mazda electing to give the event a miss after a disastrous Monte Carlo. Toyota were out in force and had three GTA's for Kankkunen, Waldegaard, and Sainz. Enjoy watching the cars 'yumping' almost at head height - without putting life and limb at the risk to the same extent as the Portuguese spectators.

Pass Through the City

Pass Through the City documents a tripartite performance staged by Park Hyunki in Daegu on March 22, 1981. Park fabricated two enormous stones out of resin and embedded mirrors onto their surfaces. One stone was installed on the floor of Maekhyang Gallery, while the other was loaded onto a sixteen-meter truck and driven through downtown Daegu for forty minutes. After the ride, the stone was moved to a busy sidewalk by a bank, where passersby touched its surface, gathered around it, and looked at themselves in the mirror. The work was recorded on 16mm film.
