The director's pregnant sister moved to Hsinchu upon marriage and hasn't returned to Taipei in a year. Their mother hoped to tend his sister during postpartum confinement, but instead, this made their relationship deteriorate even further. The director also uses the camera to search for traces of his father, a Taiwanese businessman in mainland China who has been absent since his childhood. The film tells the story of how their family fell apart more than 30 years ago and then came back together.

Above Ground

The documentary sheds light on Syrian history in the context of its civilizational development and formation over many centuries, sharpens the viewer's attention to the changes in public opinion that have taken place over time. To reveal social processes, the author uses a special monologue method, and the vision itself is realized by combining the internal analysis of the hero of the film and its director, who returns to Syria and sees his country after a long absence differently, than it was before the war. The film shows the destruction and vandalism caused by terrorists in many archeological, religious and residential areas of the country, which became dangerous for the population, especially in late 2015 and early 2016 - the most difficult phases of the war on Syrian soil.

Amen, Amen, Amen: A Story for Our Times

To honour the UAE’s Year of Tolerance, their ex-patriate Jewish community commissioned a Torah scroll and luxuriant case as a gift dedicated to the memory of the late Sheikh Zayed, the Founding Father of the UAE. This marked the first time in history that a Torah was dedicated to an Arab-Muslim ruler. This fascinating documentary takes us behind the scenes of their efforts and interactions with the Sheikh and the rulers. As evidenced by the film’s title and its shared meaning in Hebrew, Arabic and English, this film celebrates the breath of ‘good news’ toward greater tolerance and co-existence in the Arab Peninsula.

Inang Maynila

“When I was growing up, my mum very rarely spoke about her life in the Philippines,” says director James J. Robinson of the inspiration behind this film. “My only impression of her life before moving to Australia was formed exclusively through rare family photos and the music she’d sing out loud in her room.” Inang Maynila was inspired by the director’s desire to paint a picture of his mother’s childhood in Quezon City and, by extension, for an idea of his heritage. Robinson spoke to his mother’s school friends, visited her former school and church, and stayed in her local neighborhood. “Speaking to these lifelong friends of my hers, I discovered that the story of my mother’s childhood ran much deeper than that of one person,” says the director, who used local actors to recreate the narrated memories of these women.

Heavy Haulage- In The Jungle

The São Manoel Hydroelectric Plant: in the heart of Brazil, deep in the Amazon rainforest. Everything the site needs must be transported via a long and arduous route. These transformers weigh over 200 metric tons each - they have to travel 4,000 kilometers before they reach their final destination. The workers at Megatranz are experts: long distances are easy for them. The haulage convoy covers most of the route easily - but the last 100 kilometers are difficult. The temperature is 40 degrees Celsius in the shade, the conditions merciless, the roads dusty and the bridges old. This is demanding work for the workers and the cargo. But it’s also a bonding experience. Mistakes can be fatal. The way across the river is dangerous. A ferry is repurposed into a barge: a highly risky maneuver. Nerves of steel are just part of the job - but that’s no use when your luck runs out.

Riverbanks

The villages of Vadul Rașcov and Rașcov (Transnistria) are separated only by the waters of the Dniester. For years, people communicated with each other without obstacles: getting married, visiting each other for baptisms or other family celebrations, and sometimes even for a glass of wine. Things have changed since the Dniester became a border river. A check in point appeared on the left bank, which controls and authorizes crossings from one bank to another. Ever since the bans were imposed, people go out on the shore and communicate by shouting because the "screaming" is not subject to prohibitions and does not involve any costs. Ana and Vasile Manea lived in their youth on the left bank, then moved to the right, while their children chose to live on the other side. Such twisted connections are plentiful in these two villages.
