The Sandcastle Takeover

Located in the heart of University of São Paulo's School of Communication and Arts, the Prainha ('Little Beach') is the epicenter of students' artistic, cultural, political and social endeavors. But once the university demands its closure for structural and aesthetic renovations — a controversial project in and of itself —, the response is an outcry of mourning and frustration. The documentary explores different experiences from people whose work and passions were born in the history of the Prainha, and what are the hopes for the future of the space.

A Missing Can of Film

Zahir Raihan was a Bangladeshi writer and filmmaker, best known for his documentary film Stop Genocide (1971), made during the Bangladesh Liberation War and released after his death. Raihan disappeared at the age of 36 shortly after the war’s end. Rumors circulated that there was a missing can of film that contained footage that would have been embarrassing to leaders of the new country. Mohaiemen’s A Missing Can of Film intersperses footage from Raihan’s body of work with contemporary footage shot in the aftermath of the 2024 student uprising in Bangladesh, questioning the carriers—film canisters, dusty equipment—of disputed history.

BASS BOSS

Bass Boss is a new film by REProduce, our Goa, India-based COSMOS Embassy. In this 30 minutes documentary, director Rana Ghose investigates Dek Bass, a sound system style unique to West Bengal, and sets out to meet its elusive leading light, DJ Khobir. Overwhelming, aggressive, and prone to virulent fandom in his region, this form of sonic expression and assertion is of its own genesis. There is no reference to Jamaican sound system culture within. It was rendered pure and unadulterated from the mind of one person: DJ Khobir.Rana Ghose is a curator, economist, writer, and filmmaker. He steers REProduce Artists, a collective of artists, organizers, and content creators that produce interventions in non traditional spaces, engaging with music and video in modular, sequential plays.
