Las Vegas: Last Oasis in America is an irreverent exploration of this uniquely American city, which thrives on transience and celebrates wealth and instant success. Cohen's tour of Las Vegas includes a visit to the Liberace Museum, where the pianist's brother treats Cohen and her crew to a reverential look at Liberace memorabilia, as well as the casinos where patrons gather with intense concentration at the gaming tables. Cohen portrays a culture of high expectations and inevitable disappointment, exhibiting humor and empathy for the people who win and lose in the money-society of "the strip."

Commissioned by French TV, Yorktown covers the bicentennial commemoration of the Siege of Yorktown, near the end of the American Revolutionary War, where the Americans and their French allies defeated the English. The festivities celebrating Franco-American friendship give Ophüls some amusement, as he takes a gleefully ironic look at the formally “friendly” meeting between Mitterand and Reagan, or exposes the absurdity of patriotic folklore.

A beautiful photographic quality characterised Maziere’s Swimmer which used freeze frame and repeat shots of a swimmer in what could only be the Mediterranean Sea and light. With a fractured ‘found’ soundtrack, what it lacked in depth (and this may be due to its ‘series’ nature) it made up in its surface tension.

Maimed and broken soldiers return home from Afghanistan, and there is neither pomp nor joy in this return. For the men and their mothers, there is only a complete lack of understanding of the reasons for the bloodshed and the high price they have had to pay for the war. Yet the force of personal drama is such that it overcomes fear of the system that seeks to silence the tragedy.

‘The Force Behind its Movement’ is structured in four parts, corresponding with the cardinal directions – West, South, East and North. These parts/directions have in common that they appear through or because of the wind. The work opens with the text: ‘We only see the fluttering of the flag. The force behind its movement remains invisible.’ Next, the camera, attached to a wind vane, moves around chaotically. Curtains are waving softly, affecting our view of a block of flats. The camera determines our view, literally, by alternatively focusing and moving out of focus. Then the curtain flaps in front of a screen, which shows Marilyn Monroe wearing a number of tulle shawls. This cover aimed at revealing more than it covered. But the tulle curtains prove exactly the opposite, because the viewer in fact reverts to being a voyeur again.

Michael Clegg takes us on a journey around the places that inspired both authors, Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay, just five miles apart on the Yorkshire coast. With the help of excerpts from two films based on their novels, ‘Turn of the Tide’ (1935), and ‘Scars of Dracula’ (1970), Clegg provides a guide to their work and the very different tales they have to tell.

The Shuar Indians live on the western edge of the tropical rainforest, between the Amazon lowlands in the east and the Andean highlands in the west, on the territories of the two states Ecuador and Peru. "Earlier, when I was a child, my grandfather took me by the hand and led me up a hill. He was already walking with a stick, but was still strong. He said to me: This land is Shuar land and the one who created this nature is a being called Arútam. When I die, you children will have to defend this land that belongs to us. These words are forever etched in my memory" (Antonio Chiriap, regional president of the Shuar-Federation).

A superb momento of rallying in New Zealand. Only three European crews made the long trip - Jimmy McRae (Ford XR4), Simon Stubbings (Nissan 323) and Se pages Heider (Opel Kadett GS1). The Australiasian aces gave their all at this combined tarmac/forest stage rally but ultimately they had little hope of catching Austrian Heider despite valiant efforts from Ray Wilson (Nissan 323 Turbo). The slippery conditions caught out many competitors, the quagmire bordering most stages causing havoc, when even the best service crews took an hour to rescue cars which strayed but a few feet from their chosen course! All in all, an action-packed review of this round of the 1988 Drivers' World Rally Championship.

Round 6 of the 1986 World Rally Championship and once again the Acropolis Rally proved to be one of the toughest events of the season. There was plenty of slipping and sliding on the loose gravel stages, plenty of punctures and out of the 101 starters, only 34 cars were to finish. Tough indeed - and that was without the battle that ensued at the top of the The event was billed as a three way battle between the big guns of Peugeot, Ford and Lancia (Audi had withdrawn from the series after the recent tragedies). With top drivers Stig Blomqvist (Ford RS200), Juha Kankkunen (Peugeot) and Markku Alen (Lancia) all leading on the road at some point during the event - the outcome was unpredictable!
