"New tasks are emerging for filmmakers on behalf of the labour movement" – this early work by Gisela Tuchtenhagen, Wochenschau 4, was produced as a collective effort within the highly politicised DFFB (German Film and Television Academy, Berlin). It not only documents the "Hot Autumn"– the strike movement in Italy in 1969/1970 – but is itself a contribution to the "campaign for counter-information" to reporting on middle-class radio and television.

A documentary fairy-tale about the struggle for identity in the Hunza Valley set in a village located in the Northern-Pakistan somewhere between the past and the future. A magnificent turquoise lake in between rough, steep cliff surrounds the small village. But the lake hasn’t been always there. One day, an enormous landslide blocked a river. In a few months, this river turned into a huge lake, which is now up to 30km long. Thousands of homes and fields were flooded. Entire villages disappeared forever. Thousands of people got dislocated and had to look for different places where to live. What is left are the stories of those that once used to live there which are passed on from generation to generation.

sononda is the first part of the short film series future past perfect and was originally recorded in 2006. the series whose single fragments are supposed to be parts of a larger scale film project is designed as a row of conceptually independent movies that document nicolai's focus of interest of the respective year of origin and also builds up on the results of the movie(s) before. despite sononda's visual quality seems artificial at times, it was shot in a natural environment. the focus is directed on the sculptural quality of light. the correspondence of both music - with its low frequency modulations and merging soundscapes - and light play on the curved surfaces of the sculptural stone formations create an ever-changing atmosphere of concrete and abstract appearances.

A boy raised in the mountains films his home surroundings. He shows his sister, his father, their house with a treehouse in the garden, and the family’s old dog. He runs and cycles while holding the camera, creating choppy, chaotic images that match the energetic life of a child.

In the middle of Berlin, in the old Scheunenviertel district, lies Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz - a rough place dominated by the monumental Volksbühne building. Eastern Jewish immigrants lived here before the war. It was a dreary area, but one with character. For it was here that the ideas of the 20th century were wrestled and fought over. It was about politics and world views, but also about art, cinema and theater.

In Northern Russia, a few dozen people still live in their traditional houses surrounded by water, stone, and sand. Cut off from vital infrastructure, almost forgotten by regional governance, these people have to cope with their everyday struggles.

The documentary is about the British Choreographer Royston Maldoom (OBE) and his work on the Community Dance Piece that he created with children, teenagers and adults in Germany's city Detmold in 2010. It's a film about the educational power of dance.

1990. As part of the reunification process, the West takes charge of the harmonization project between the two territories. From the outset, all of East Germany's industrial assets were transferred to a public company, the "Treuhand," which operated for four years. This marked the beginning of a rapid privatization of the entire economy of the former GDR, comprising some 8,000 public companies employing around 4 million people who needed to be offered a new future. At the head of this gigantic public holding company, Birgit Breuel, a member of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), was the subject of both praise and criticism.

As part of the 2006 Mozart Year, 28 Austrian filmmakers, including Ulrich Seidl, were commissioned to create a minute-long film featuring Mozart's music. Seidl decided on the slaves' chorus from Zaide: "Brothers, let us be merry and bravely defy adversity" rings out while two dimly-lit men give themselves over to purposeless pleasure. They masturbate mechanically and monotonously. Paper towels stand ready next to them, as if waiting for consummation, the climax. Nietzsche claimed that all pleasure seeks to be eternal; Brothers, Let Us Be Merry depicts the hangover left by this unfulfilled utopia.

The film shows the preparations and proceedings of a traditional peasant wedding in the Schwalm region. Special focus is placed on the traditional costumes (especially those of the bride) and the rituals surrounding the marriage ceremony.
