Westray

In this feature documentary, filmmaker Paul Cowan offers an innovative, moving account of the Westray coal mine disaster that killed 26 men in Nova Scotia on May 9, 1992. The film focuses on the lives of three widows and three miners lucky enough not to be underground that day when the methane and coal dust ignited. But their lives were torn apart by the events. Meet some of the working men, who felt they had no option but to stay on at Westray. And wives, who heard the rumours, saw their men sometimes bloodied from accidents and stood by them, hoping it would all turn out all right. This is a film about working people everywhere whose lives are often entrusted to companies that violate the most fundamental rules of safety and decency in the name of profit.

On January 1st of 2007, Mekas began his epic "365" project inspired by the Italian poet Petrarca and his Canzoniere. Releasing one film for every day of the year through his website, Mekas drew upon a vast archive of film and video footage recorded over the past decades, as well as new material from his everyday life. The "365" project painted an intimate portrait of Mekas' life, friends and travels, in the poignant diaristic style which he has come to embody. The project attracted a strong international following and prompted many filmmakers around the world to begin their own "365" film and video projects. March 16, 2007: "I take Helsinki-Tampere train. The Dinosaur Hunters

One man who kept asking questions was Gideon Mantell, the amateur paleontologist who, in the early 19th century, fought to get the British scientific establishment to accept Britain had been inhabited by dinosaurs. As this dramatised documentary shows, Mantell had an uphill battle in a time when the biblical account of creation was considered literal truth and authorities such as the Reverend William Buckland were determined that science remain "the handmaid of religion".
