El secreto de Alberto Portera

The secret of Alberto Portera (David Plaza, 2025) is a selection of fragments of an unpublished filmmaker so far: Alberto Portera. Neurosurgeon by profession, but interested in the artistic gesture, to which he dedicated numerous articles and essays, he recorded with his camera the artists of the group El Paso in action, in his daily artistic activity (Millares, Saura, Hernández Mompó, Canogar...). But he also recorded filming of Carlos Saura, clinical essays, trips, performances... Alberto Portera presents himself to us as a missing link between the tradition of classic documentary and amateur art and essay cinema. These films have recently been restored and digitized by the Juan March Foundation.

La Raya. Los últimos contrabandistas

Coffee growers on the Spanish-Portuguese border worked amid corruption and misery on the borderline. It was an extremely difficult period. In the midst of the Spanish post-war period, they traveled along Europe's oldest border on the banks of the Guadiana River. In 2017, this border celebrates its 750th anniversary. The testimonies of those old backpackers between Encinasola (Spain) and Barrancos (Portugal) tell a story of hunger in the midst of two dictatorships, those of Franco and Salazar.

La llei del caliquenyo

In the aftermath of the war, when tobacco was black gold and smuggling was a means of survival, a small village in Les Garrigues became the epicenter of an underground revolution: the caliqueño. This is the story of the black market that arose around its illicit production and sale during the 20th century, facing persecution by the state. A clandestine route that emerged in Juneda, passing through Torregrossa, Montclar, Torres de Segre, the Valencian Country, and Andorra. A story of struggle and resistance that spread like fog.

L'Exode d'un peuple

At the start of 1939 an exodus of nearly 500,000 Spanish Republicans, soldiers and civilians together, fleeing Franco's troops crossed the border to France. Louis Llech, a Perpignan based shopkeeper and enlightened amateur cineaste, owned a 16mm camera. Together with his friend Isambert, he filmed this extraordinary migration. Fascinated by the military aspect of this Retirada, he favoured shots of parades, of crowds, like those showing military equipment. He nonetheless also showed civilian distress, without insisting on its picturesque aspects, focussing more on images of the uninterrupted flow of refugees.

Tres días de julio

"Tres días de julio" shows what happened in the city of Cádiz in the hours prior to the coup d'état of July 18, 1936, as well as what happened until the moment the Cadiz capital succumbs to the rebels on the morning of Sunday the 19th. The documentary features the participation of historians, relatives of victims of reprisals, and even some direct testimonies of people who lived those tragic days in their youth. The city and province of Cádiz are described as a fundamental piece in the coup because, when it failed in the main cities of the country, they began to play a fundamental role in the strategy followed by the rebels in the immediate Civil War.

Sons of Karabakh

The second war in Nagorno-Karabakh has demonstrated the brutality of modern warfare. It has been a conflict of extermination, wherein little more than a month more than 5000 people were exterminated. This is the story of a national trauma for Armenia, that still with the genocide of 1915 present in the collective memory, sees the Nagorno-Karabakh as the last defense of its identity. This is the story told by its protagonists; the different generations of ordinary citizens turned into soldiers.
