Is my girlfriend willing to raise a child with me? Society’s disapproval of our relationship requires frank discussions with her and my parents. The Last Mongolian Horseman

The Last Mongolian Horseman follows the life of a nomadic shepherd family across four seasons in the vast grasslands of Inner Mongolia. Through quiet observation and poetic imagery, the film captures the rhythms of traditional Mongolian life amidst growing pressures from industrialization and cultural displacement. As the family tends to their animals and sustains their ancestral way of life, the documentary reveals the ecological and spiritual fragility of a vanishing culture. This intimate portrait becomes a powerful meditation on identity, survival, and the unyielding connection between people and their land.

Phú Quốc 1.0 & 2.0

During the Chinese Civil War, Taiwan was seen as the terminal destination for a unit fleeing themainland. However, while crossing the Sino-Vietnamese border, they were detained on an islandcalled “Phú Quốc” by the French authorities, who were colonizing Vietnam at that time. Unawareof how long this temporary detention would last, they began transforming this primitive island into abase for a future counterattack on the mainland. Four years later, they finally managed to sail to Tai-wan — an island they had never been to but regarded as their homeland. Years later, in Kaohsiung’s Chengcing Lake, there is also an artificial island named “Phú Quốc” built to commemorate this unit, effectively becoming Phú Quốc 2.0.

Off to the Island

"Have you ever wanted to just leave everything behind and take off to a faraway place?" Here are two people who didn’t just imagine it but actually made it happen. Do-won and Myung-chul left behind their familiar and convenient city life to start anew in an unfamiliar place—Cheongsan (靑山). Cheongsan Island reveals itself only after a six-hour bus ride from Seoul, followed by another hour-long ferry journey. In a place where even those in their sixties are considered young, the arrival of a couple in their thirties was nothing short of astonishing. Wherever they go, their youth stands out. Do-won works as a social worker at a local children’s center, while Myung-chul volunteers at a church café. Though they are still adjusting, little by little, they are building a home for themselves on the island. In Cheongsan, a designated "Slow City" where slowness is considered an art, Do-won and Myung-chul lead surprisingly busy lives.

Family ID

My mother, who cherished me as her late-in-life daughter, passed away from COVID-19. Among her belongings, I discovered a note hinting at adoption, setting me on a journey to uncover the secrets of my birth. Another identity, another name. Surprising revelation of sisters despite being the only daughter. The harsh reality of being abandoned by biological parents just for being born without balls. In an instant, the beliefs I held as 'truth' collapsed like dominoes. I split from my long-time boyfriend and faced gender identity confusion. It hit me hard that my dreams of a conventional family were more hers than mine. In all the chaos, I admitted to myself and fully embraced my identity as a queer. With my non-binary partner, I discovered a newfound sense of love, building a family that feels authentically ours.

The Last Mermaids of Korea

The phenomenally resilient sea women of Marado Island, at the southernmost tip of South Korea, are like no one else on the planet. Six women aged in their 40s, 60s, 80s and 90s have lately been joined by a solitary young male diver, Min-Jong. Most of the women are well beyond 60. They may stumble walking on land, but underwater, they are transformed into graceful swimmers who haul in twice their bodyweight in seafood every day. These are Korea’s traditional Haenyeo: female divers who hold their breath for more than two minutes to depths of up to 20 meters. They make their livelihood combing the seabed for culinary treasures for restaurants in Korea and Japan: kelp, sea cucumbers, conchs, and, most prized of all, abalone.

This is a story for small children. a true-life love story

There are three main elements in the video: English text, Korean voice-over, and images. The written text is from the example sentences in English dictionaries. I always find those examples fascinating as they display random, surprising and poetic qualities. Their fragmentary aspects also refer to the possibilities of varied narrative context. Subtitles typically function as a translation of the spoken (original) text in films. However, the English text in this piece is the original and the spoken text (voice-over) is a translation. There are two kinds of translations: from one language to another and from written text to spoken text. The B&W images were created as responses to either the English text or Korean text. The three elements had equal weights in terms of creating rhythms in editing process.

The Fadings

Is it easy for a person's small wishes to come true? For example, if a mother doesn’t remember her birthday, how can she find it? For example, when an old aunt looks at her son who has been paralyzed in bed for forty years, who will take care of him? For example, if an uncle who misses his wife confides in front of her grave, will he get a response? For example, the hard-working sister-in-law hopes that the day of no more domestic violence and a better life will come sooner... In this invisible web of love, everyone carries their own obsessions and strives to fight against forgetfulness.

Everybody had a plan

"Have the right number of children and raise them well." This slogan epitomized an era dominated by fears that rapid population growth would impede economic progress. In 1961, with the launch of the First Five-Year Economic Development Plan, Korea initiated its family planning program as a measure to curb the population explosion. Intertwined with various social ambitions and desires, this initiative was deemed "successful" in reshaping society. Today, as we live with the outcomes of this all-out effort for growth, this film revisits the process of "planning" families to reflect on South Korea's future.

Children of Blessing

This film follows the hardships Lahu girls face as they come down from the hills to enroll at a Chinese primary school. The Chinese students laugh as the Lahu girls who finish last in races and on tests. One girl falls ill, and is sent home; another finds out her mother has run away. The girls' teacher feels frustrated and hopeless; the school principal wishes he had never admitted them. Can the Lahu girls make it in modern-day China? And what price will they have to pay? Do Chinese schools empower or assimilate China's minority children? "Children of Blessing" takes a controversial stance on this ever sensitive question.
