CCP’s Ternocon 2018

Ternocon 2018 was a terno-making convention and contest for regional designers initiated by the CCP through its Cultural Exchange Department and Bench (Suyen Corporation). The project aimed to encourage the use of the terno as formal dress, to inspire a new generation of Filipino designers to make ternos that are grounded in the history of the Philippine National Dress, and to motivate regional designers to create works that are at par with the construction techniques of senior fashion designers.

Grapple

"Grapple is my impotent and shaky grip attempt to reconcile the work we are doing with AMBOS and take ownership of this physical and emotional space. The border fence, especially this particular stretch of fence, has haunted my memories, as it was absent most of my childhood and left a marked scar on my small town of Playas de Tijuana when it was installed. The fence is a permanent reminder that we are not wanted, that we are less than, that we are what gets filtered out. It is a stigma we invisibly carry the rest of our lives, as we find our place in the world navigating the liminal."

Secret Music

A documentary film about Pulitzer prize-winning composer David Del Tredici and the historical and cultural significance of his music within and outside the gay community. The film investigates the sometimes ineffable processes that are fundamental to music composition, performance, and the communication of meaning through art. Highlighting the nuanced challenges of private sexual identity projected outward into art, the film examines Del Tredici’s personal transformations through the joys and sorrows of gay life, and his goal of communicating sexuality through music that is influential in modern culture. Through performances of Del Tredici's atonal and neo-Romantic music and interviews with world-renowned musicians and scholars, the film explores what sexuality in music represents creatively and what the implications of identifying an art form as gay, as Del Tredici has done, may be.

After/Life

The American military has used the Arizona desert on the US border to Mexico for staging field manoeuvres since the end of World War Two. Abandoned relics strewn across the landscape bear witness to 60 years of developments in the machinery of war. Helicopters cruise above the vast area and pilots practice dropping bombs. Between these war games and the reality of surveillance cameras, border patrols and fences, migrants attempt to make their way across the desert to reach the United States. Cacti can be lifesavers, but sometimes it’s even too late for them to be of any aid. The desert claims its victims, those that manage to make it past the patrols. But there are also individuals here who help those adrift in a no man’s land between war games and reality. Those that recover the dead.
