Framed: The Outer City

The Outer City (Bayırşəhər), a special protected zone of historical and architectural significance in Baku, faces an uncertain future. The newly approved Baku City Master Plan poses a threat of demolition to this area. Two historic buildings on Tolstoy and Rostropovich Streets have already been demolished. The residents of The Outer City and a group of architects did not remain silent in the face of such blatant destruction. This documentary film portrays their struggle to protect their homes and the historical legacy of Baku — a place now being framed for destruction in the name of development.

Album

Album combines four portraits of places and people filmed over the course of one year: A New Year shows a few days spent in a small hut near the German Czech border. The rhythm of the days dictates the rhythm of the film - making a fire, looking out of the window, spending time together at the table. La Grotta documents a peculiar state of relaxed concentration on a spring day by the sea, solving crossword puzzles with friends and panning shots along the rock formations. Late Summer is a portrait of our friends Heide and Karola, who recently moved into a new apartment. From the stairwell to their rooms, light, objects and colors reveal the idiosyncrasies and experiences of two shared lives. In the fall we visited Ewelina, Nuno and Helena in Portugal, Mãozinha is an immediate and gentle expression of these days together: falling leaves in the park, small hands and large objects, the setting sun paints the clouds in different shades.

Quando Parir é um Feitiço

Marina gave birth to her son at the age of seventeen in a maternity hospital, where she endured sexual, obstetric, and psychological violence at the hands of medical professionals. Eleven years later, she turns to performance as a gestural act to birth the swords of Ogum and other vegetal kingdom species-royalties, transforming childbirth into a spell. Surrounded by the swords, she finds ways to defend herself and challenge modern science, which is deeply rooted in coloniality, racism, and the exploitation of human and non-human bodies. Modernity, after all, seizes the planet and its kingdoms to destroy them under colonial capitalist disregard.

Pai Niang Niang: The Last Osmanthus Blossom

In March 1972, Rebecca Pan self-financed the production of the first ever Mandarin musical, Pai Niang Niang and performed for 60 times at Princess Theatre, Tsim Sha Tsui. This is not only a piece of history of Hong Kong art and culture, but also the most important milestone of Rebecca’s oeuvre. This work used the Broadway musical model to adapt the famous Chinese myth Legend of the White Snake. Bringing together Eastern and Western theatrical styles, the production combined Chinese traditional music, dance, costume and stage design with modern Western concepts. Despite this bold attempt, the resulting work was ahead of its time and was not a commercial success. Also, it was thought to have not been captured on film and faded into obscurity. In April 2023, however, a partial film record of the performance was miraculously discovered. The restored surviving footage has become the finale of this documentary, Pai Niang Niang: The Last Osmanthus Blossom.

Ucrania: OBLIGADOS A SOBREVIVIR

The war in Ukraine continues to leave indelible scars, but beyond military strategies and political speeches, there are stories that are rarely told: those of people who survive day by day amid the conflict. In an effort to document the human reality of war, Rubén Díez (Lethal Crysis), one of the most influential Spanish-speaking travel and exploration content creators, and Ignacio Marín, a renowned photojournalist specializing in war zones, traveled to the heart of the conflict in December 2024 to capture the experiences of those who resist in the shadows. For two weeks, they visited trenches, evacuation points, rehabilitation centers, and front lines, meeting soldiers, doctors, civilians, and refugees who shared their daily lives in a world where normalcy has been destroyed. Through intimate encounters and raw testimonies, this feature-length documentary offers an honest, unfiltered look at the human capacity to adapt, resist, and carry on—even in the darkest of settings.

Danse Macabre

Combining poetry, dance, music, and archival audio, Danse Macabre paints a portrait of the human psyche, drawing on the work of Dr Carl Jung. The film explores the different aspects of the conscious and unconscious minds which are represented through character performances from dancers, singers, unseen voices, and musicians. Underscoring the film is the wisdom of ancestral memory, depicted via the embodied knowledge of the Yoruba Egúngún masquerade. The work is an inquiry into the human condition, exploring the parallels between modern psychology, aspects of Yoruba culture, and east Asian understandings around life force and energy.
