Mandatory Training

A short, socially critical mosaic shot on 16mm film explores how much the way of thinking has changed in Western society in the past few decades, wondering whether equality and diversity are a matter of course, or whether they are still just meaningless words. Patrick Tarrant’s film juxtaposes excerpts from White magazines from the past century and mechanical voice-over segments of an online learning module on equality, inclusion and diversity for present-day employees. – Ji.hlava IDFF 2021 "Mandatory Training is a slightly ornery reaction to being forced to complete computer-based training and tests on matters that range from the banal to the ideological. For better or worse, if you answer wrongly on a question relating to race or gender, for example, you can, as the module explains, keep repeating the test until you pass." – Patrick Tarrant

Ahorita Frames

From September 2001 to April 2002 Nan and Nancy along with other Latin American women worked for the asbestos company “Branch,” cleaning the luxury apartments, offices, and banks of Manhattan in the hermetically sealed zone of “Ground Zero.” The women had neither residence permits nor work permits in the USA, and their dust masks had no filter for asbestos. At the PedWest border crossing in Tijuana refugees perform their stories. They play asbestos workers, American soldiers, Red Cross staff, and firefighters. Migrants from Guatemala and Venezuela and Mexicans who were deported from the USA to Tijuana: they are all stuck at the border due to the “Remain in Mexico” policy. Ahorita Frames moves the stories of the asbestos workers from New York in 2001 across the border to Tijuana in 2019, thus reconfiguring the political cartography of power relations.

Cabo Tuna or the Management of the Sky

"Cabo Tuna or The Management of the Sky" is a materialistic re-reading of the history of artificial satellites and digital surveillance which, using footage found exclusively on YouTube, intertwines the origins of the Nazi and Soviet arms industries with the digital surveillance systems used in the Mexican context of the war on drugs. This narrative arc allows for an exploration of the Mexican government's failed attempts to create its own aeronautical rockets, the growing dependence on technology from foreign powers and companies, the privatization of space, and finally, the contemporary strengthening of the state's military control.
