The Olive Tree and the Baobab

The baobabs of Africa and the olive trees of Southern Italy: what connects these two great trees, both parts of such distant worlds and cultures? An ancestral symbiosis has kept them intertwined with humanity and history for millennia; a fabric of religious beliefs and legends keeps them at the center of ancient symbols and rituals. Their fruits’ richness and the thousands of uses that communities have been able to find in the shadow of their mighty branches make them precious and irreplaceable. Today, even their suffering and their progressive decay unite them tragically, both victims of climate change caused by those who have always fed on them.

Until the End of the World

This is an artificial intelligence (AI)-generated film that envisions the Middlesbrough Collection as a sleeping repository of the past and present. Perks and Stewart used the Collection and displays as source material, asking three groups to imagine the dreams of the Collection through creative writing, meditation, observation exercises and karaoke. The resulting material was inputted into ChatGPT to generate a script and then fed into an AI moving image platform, Pictory AI, which translated it into a sequence of moving images from existing databases.

Cosmic Miniatures

At 91 years of age, Alexander Kluge is solidly regarded as a trailblazing figure in New German Cinema and the avant-garde. He remains active and curious about media, so it’s no wonder that he recently began experimenting with artificial intelligence. He has been exploring a particular programme developed in Munich for medical research, which he systematically strains in order to find his images at the farthest ends of the system's creative faculties. With these, Kluge plays in the same essayistic fashion beloved from his television work – historical footage and a plenitude of texts, comics, charts and cabaret. In short: facts and fictions freely intermingle.

All Our Relations: Tribute to the Orca

All Our Relations: Tribute to the Orca is a moving 7-minute film drawing on footage from an Indigenous-centered public event during Orca Action Month, June 2024 at the Seattle Aquarium as well as other interviews. It delivers powerful voices of regional Indigenous leaders delivering somber and urgent narratives. Tribute to the Orca highlights Indigenous communities' ancient kinship with orcas and salmon, and the importance of reciprocity in our relationship with our caretaker: Mother Nature. A special focus is on the Southern Resident orcas whose survival, like the survival of Indigenous lifeways here in the Pacific Northwest, depends on scha’enexw (the Salmon People). The event and film are a project of Se’Si’Le, an Indigenous-led nonprofit organization based in Bellingham, WA in collaboration with Salish Sea and Northern Straits Native Nations, Save our Wild Salmon and Washington Conservation Action.

Hütten sind für alle da

The film takes us behind the torn facades of Leipzig's eastern district. Over a period of three years, filmmaker Birk Poßecker has portrayed a neighborhood characterized by contrasts, authentic stories, and personalities. Fragile snapshots accompanied by a trashy-romantic VHS vibe. This documentary flickers with its blurred lines between yesterday and today, raising the ever-present conflicts in trendy neighborhoods: displacement, inequality, and racism. The whole thing is carried by the peculiar charm of its residents and the ruinous beauty of eastern Leipzig. Whether it's autonomous squatters, dynamic seniors in the middle of a gun-free zone, or the Persian carpet shop—everyone somehow finds their place here. And this documentary wishes with every single frame that it should stay that way.
