Sueños en concreto

What do a young entrepreneur (Juan Carlos), a street dweller (El Indio), an unemployed mother with three young children (La Zarca), a laborer (Alejandro), an experienced welder (Jhon) and a neighborhood youth (Bairon) have in common? All believe they can leave an inspiring testimony for the future and are part of the community of Puerto Resistencia, the symbolic gateway to the marginalized neighborhoods of eastern Cali. Here cultural and social awareness flourishes during Colombia's 2021 national strike. Instead of giving in to hopelessness and driven by their dreams, they raise the Monument to Resistance, a 10-meter building, which becomes a powerful symbol of unity and memory. Through the work of collective creation, it fosters a more inclusive and empathetic environment and shows how art can catalyze change and strengthen community identity.

Icarus, Come

I found a little bird on the sidewalk, just around the corner from my house. We became roommates and close friends, connected by our shared otherness, confined within the four walls of my bedroom. Setting up the camera became a ritual, a way for us to interact and explore our relationship. As I scroll back through the memories on my iPhone, Icarus gradually transcends his avian nature. Slowly, he transforms into an image himself, inviting reflection on the nature of the human-pet relationship that we carry in our back pocket.

Walkerville

A fictional/documentary tone-poem, making for a kind of portrait of the town of Walkerville, Montana, and of the lead actor, Gary Winterholler, who had suffered a severe stroke several years earlier and was in a process of recuperation. There is no “story” or “narrative”, rather a kind of atmosphere and ambience in which a feeling for the town and its present and former inhabitants, and compassion for Gary, are generated by means more akin to music and poetry than narrative/story-telling.

Memory Hole - Animals Are Over!

A terrifying multisensory experience, Memory Hole takes actual home movies, recontextualizes and splices them together to take a hard look at what this country was doing unnoticed in the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s. The results are more unsettling than any horror film, creating a snapshot of the eerie precursor to internet fame that will turn the viewer’s blood into a viscous, demonic sludge of oil and microplastics. This is the origin story of social media, youtube reality stars, and selfies.

Sinking Latitude

Considering the underground as both a metaphor and a manifest reality, Zheng’s film Sinking Latitude focuses on a myth about underground flooding. The city where the story takes place (Zigong city in the Sichuan province, China) has a history of salt mining that spans more than 2000 years, and generations of residents who have lived there have passed down a prophetic myth for centuries–that due to excessive mining, the city's underground has long been hollowed out and depleted, filling with salty brine, and that one day, when an earthquake occurs, an underground flood of salty liquid, the mine itself, will surge out and engulf the city.

Everything That Connects Us

All That Connects Us is a documentary on the theme of transmission. It addresses the universal questions of our roots, our history, that of our family, the bond that unites and sometimes separates. How can we build ourselves and what can we pass on to our children when part of our past is unknown to us? This film is the story of the passing of the baton from a mother with her baggage as a Korean adoptee, to her teenage daughter, at a time when identity construction is at its peak, a pivotal and delicate period of breaking with childhood.

Ocupadas

"Ocupadas" is a documentary that reveals, with urgency and sensitivity, the daily lives of women activists who transformed an old urban house into Casa Rose Nunes, a space of refuge, struggle, and resistance against gender violence. Over several days, the film follows the growing tension in the face of police threats, until the brutal moment when the space is dismantled. However, the house goes beyond its walls: it survives in the bodies, voices, and alliances between women. Even torn from its physical location, Casa Rose Nunes continues to exist, reinventing freedom, protecting stories, and saving lives.

11 Underground

In 1984, eleven miners entrenched themselves underground to protest for better working conditions in the mining village of Almaden in southern Spain. The strike, deep within the toxic mercury mine, lasted for eleven long days, during which the whole village showed its solidarity with the men protesting underground. The mine was the heart of Almaden, around which everything revolved – until it longer existed. The mercury mine was closed for good at the beginning of the 21st century. As a consequence, the area has experienced mass unemployment and slow decline.

The Green Desert

The Green Desert presents a dazzling kaleidoscope of vineyards, date ranches, and bell pepper farms in the Coachella Valley near the Salton Sea. The much larger Imperial Valley harvests leafy greens by the truckload, delivering over 1 billion servings a year. The alfalfa it grows is the bedrock of the food supply chain, making dairy and meat production possible. A total of 90% of the winter vegetables consumed in the US are produced in these two regions. Without them, the nation’s food security would vanish. Both of these regions rely on imported Colorado River water, a resource dwindling by the year. The need for conservation has never been greater, but will desperate measures be enough? The era of limits has been reached. We are at a crossroads. The future of the American West will be shaped by the choices we make.

Boalândia

The documentary shows the cultural resistance in the peripheries of Brazil, where people fight for visibility with the means of art. They occupy cities and raise their voice against discrimination, police violence, racism and homophobia. For three years, the filmmakers worked and lived with the collectives and activists, accompanying them in the Amazon rainforest, at protests in the capital and in the subcultures of Brazilian metropolises. With their own films, music and performances, the protagonists fight for attention —in the midst of an uncompromising and highly accelerated social reality.
