Madrid, Bad Life

Over a hundred years since the publication of the sociological text, La mala vida en Madrid, that coined the term in Spain, what does it mean to be a ‘lowlife’? Eye-catching, almost otherworldy and unashamedly provocative, this commentary on class, sexuality and urban stratification appropriates the pathologising label of ‘Other’ to shine a light on the explosion of ‘lifeforms’ in the Spanish capital today. Featuring the clever use of 8mm to create a surreal, pseudo-documentary look that draws in and distances simultaneously, Madrid, Bad Life is a sophisticated and thought-provoking high-concept work.

Roof of Leaves

Constantin, Sarah and Gregor live in a polyamorous relationship. Their intimate confession is not just a demonstration of a free relationship between three people. The lovers, who have intimate conversations, sing, tease each other, or remain silent together, give a glimpse into the life of a social unit that takes questions of trust and tolerance to extremes. A polyamorous relationship can sometimes be even more solid than a couple because it goes beyond the familiar. It represents an experimental space where safe boundaries are abandoned and a gateway is opened to a frighteningly unrestrained universe where established patterns of behavior do not apply. It is a chance to free oneself from inner demons and be renewed within. To find ourselves, we must first lose ourselves.

Nazis on Trial: Nuremberg in Colour

"Nuremberg 1945. The second-largest city in Bavaria lays in ruins. After almost six years of the Second World War, Germany had surrendered unconditionally on May 8. Adolf Hitler, Germany's infamous dictator committed suicide a month before, leaving his beloved country to fall apart. The Nazi Party no longer impose their notorious violence and corruption, the dictatorship has fallen apart, and the country must rebuild after a war that saw it torn apart. Now Nuremberg, where the Nazi Party once celebrated arrogant rallies, was to become the scene of the party's reckoning before the law. The victorious powers - the USA, the Soviet Union, Great Britain, and France - are setting up an International Military Tribunal for this purpose to serve justice for wars of aggression, mass murders and twelve years of dictatorship. The once seemingly invincible political party was now left in ruins, just a bad memory for Germany society. Justice is going to be served."

Orion: Origin of the Gods

The oldest cultures describe how, a long time ago, they lived alongside a civilization of gods — incredible navigators and astronomers, real human-like people rather than imaginary beings. And direct contact with them was a regular part of life. They also agree that although these humanoids lived on Earth, their point of origin, their homeland, was a very specific place in the night sky: Orion’s belt. In Greek mythology, it’s noted that Orion was a hunter, and the god Zeus placed him among the stars, now known as the constellation Orion. Some people, however,y even go so far as to claim that Orion was the origin of civilization itself. How did our ancestors reach this astounding conclusion?

The Hole’s Journey

A worn-out floor, the hole underneath, a political activist, and the Ouled Sbita tribe are the protagonists in this political satire. For 23 years, the director’s chair at an international art institute scratched the wooden floor. This 102cm x 120cm floor section is cut out and sent to an expropriated piece of land in Morocco. In The Hole’s Journey, Ghita Skali uses sharp wit, personal stories and playful editing to touch on specific power dynamics and freedom of choice.

If Memory Serves me Right

Rashid Irani once owned a traditional Irani restaurant, the kind that were invariably at the city's busiest crossroads and are now fast disappearing. But over the decades, Rashid's heart beat firmly at twenty four frames per second as he traversed many worlds, re-living Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Werner Herzog, Abbas Kiarostami and more; along with books on cinema and poetry. This is a film about him, his cafe, his neighbourhood and a world of erasure, accelerating in the time of covid. A dedicated bachelor who 'lived life vicariously through movies', RIP, Rashid Irani.
