The Interrogation

In America, nearly 30% of those exonerated by DNA tests had previously confessed. For more than half a century, the Reid technique was the favored method of extracting confessions out of suspects. This method of slowly building pressure often made it seem that admitting guilt was the easiest way out. But now, a number of police forces are abandoning the Reid technique because of the risk of generating false confessions. We hear from the men and women who have spent more than 20 years in prison for crimes they did not commit. They tell us about that moment when, in the darkness of the interrogation room, cut off from the world and terrified by police officers, they finally said what the interrogators wanted to hear…the moment their lives changed forever.

Nang by Nang

Nang has written her own script. Born in the Trinidadian village of Basse Terre in 1934, she grew up poor, illegitimate, mixed-race and female, but she survived by defying convention. She left the first of five husbands when he cheated on her. With no formal training, she danced with choreographer Geoffrey Holder, who later won Tony Awards for The Wiz. In her twenties, she went to work in the Orinoco delta in Venezuela, and saved enough to buy a house. She started university in New York in her 40s. Stubbornness, resourcefulness and resilience have allowed Nang to surmount life’s scars and tragedies. As her many changes of first and last names suggest, she was constantly reinventing herself. In this vivid portrait, filmmaker Richard Fung gets to know his first cousin at her current home in New Mexico and on the road in Trinidad.

Chateaux of the Loire: Royal Visit

The Loire Valley has been the playground of kings and noblemen for three centuries, spurring the construction of countless castles, each more opulent than the last. The result: a collection of architectural treasures spread across a beautiful natural setting. Chambord is certainly the best example of this excess, with 77 stairwells and 282 chimneys. Chenonceau, nicknamed the “Château des Dames” (Castle of the Ladies), is notable for its location, spanning the Cher River, and for its magnificent gardens. The region also hosts imposing medieval cities, a majestic religious history marked by cathedrals and abbeys, as well as remarkable cuisine and vineyards. Come live like royalty on a trip into the heart of history!

Revivification: Art, Activism and Politics in Ukraine

Since the Euromaidan revolution of 2014, Ukrainian politics has largely been contested between pro-European Union neoliberals and far-right nationalists, united only by their hatred of the Soviet past. Revivification looks at how contemporary artists in Ukraine, inspired by radical ideals as well as queer and feminist theory, are trying to work in this context, looking back at the socialist past and trying to build a more utopian future.

At the Fringes of the World

They live on the edge of the known world - far from civilization but affected by its consequences nonetheless. The photographer Markus Mauthe visited these last indigenous peoples to capture the inherent beauty of their cultures, before they too fall victim to ever-advancing globalisation. The journey leads from South Sudan and Ethiopia to Malay sea nomads and Brazilian Indians in Mato Grosso, who have started to defend themselves against the destruction of their natural habitat. The result is a film that captures intimate and unadulterated encounters with sumptuous photography – while also serving as an appeal for the preservation of indigenous cultures, which will surely perish unless we rethink and act accordingly.
