Tian Tong Yuan

“Tian Tong Yuan” is the life of the group-renting north drift graduates in Beijing. With my 4-month exprience living there together with them, I shoot this documentary, which describes the life of the north drifts graduates living in cellar. It reveals tha fact under the big pressure in finding jobs and high house prices, the 'ant tribe' have to live in a poor condition and have to face the great contrast between the dream after university graduation and the true world. For them, the glory of 'the chosen one' had already faded away and the life of being a 'north drift' make them struggle for survival. How to climb out of the underclass is the qusetion just as how to move out of their cellars, making them entangled every day. It is also worth thinking that can knowledge really change fate?

Mouthpiece

In democratic countries, the media is the mouthpiece of the public. However, in a Shenzhen TV station where protecting the interests of the Party trumps all, reporters are merely mouthpieces of the government. 'First Spot' is a TV programe that investigates social disparities in the community, but most of their coverage is 'buried' away. The film follows the daily operations of the TV station and hits the streets with the reporters who attempt to unveil the city and its people in all its different forms and faces.

Test prep students and filmstrips cannot resist (p). However, I have doubts about the preceding proposition (p) by making the following playful arrangement or associative reasoning, and I try to examine the possibility of its negation (~p). {α(1)=CSAT(수능), α(2)=Conformity(순응), α(3)=Non-CSAT(비수능), α(4)=Non-Conformity(비순응), α(5)=Anti-CSAT(반수능), α(6)=Anti-Conformity(반순응), ... , α(2n-1)=?, α(2n)=?, …} This work is filled with direct or indirect image(s) related to this arrangement or reasoning. Between the chain(s) of these image(s), there is (I believe) a certain emotion mixed with anxiety, remorse, anger, etc.

Family Trips

More than 60 years ago, my father followed his parents and took the train to Kaohsiung. Little did he know it was a one way trip and grew up in Liuhe Night Market ever since. Then he became a Japanese tour guide, traveling around and accompanying countless families. The most complete time we spent together was to go out with my father’s group–a way to improve intimacy. Due to the pandemic, his work has been suspended. If the past is a kind of scenery where sight-seeing is laid above; this film is a journey of himself.

Rightist Li Sheng Zhao’s Hunger Report

Li Sheng Zhao was born in a landlord family in Sichuan. He used to be a soldier, and then became a student in the Department of Economics at Sichuan University in the spring of 1961. After he became a rightist, Mr. Li was escorted to his hometown of Long Chang County in Sichuan province. He observed that people were dying with hunger in his way to hometown. With his investigative experience in army, Mr. Li was called for conscience and justice, and started a private investigation. He braved the risk of death to write this hunger report to the central party committee leaders, requesting them to take measures to save the country. Although he received a reply from Ma Yin Chu, the former president of Peking University, and Deng Zi Hui, the former vice premier of the State Council, this did not prevent him from becoming a counter-revolutionary and getting into jail for 18 years.

Adventure of Styrofoam

To solve the problem of styrofoam, an adventure of beach cleanup in Penghu began. It started with a two-person studio and expanded to include many environmentalists. As they set foot on the small offshore islands to clean up beaches, challenges arose in the process. Is the carbon footprint generated during beach cleanup more environmentally unfriendly? How to deal with the piles of litter? These problems came as a great blow to them, just like waves crashing on the shore.
