Just Another Missing Kid

On July 10, 1978, Eric Wilson - a 19-year from Ottawa and student at Tufts University - left home to drive to a summer college course in Colorado. When he went missing four days afterward in Nebraska, his family tried to persuade local and U.S. police that he wasn't simply a runaway and hadn't simply forgotten to call home. The program examines the lengths to which they had to go to find out what happened to Eric, and the byzantine nature of the legal system which seemed less interested in pursuing justice than in avoiding the expenses involved in the investigation and potential trials. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive, in partnership with Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, in 2007.

Completely Pogued

'What we did, right, was we broke open the pop market, right? To trad music, right? Irish trad music, yeah? Now what happened after that I don't know...' So confesses toothy, hard-drinkin' Shane McGowan, lead man with punk-folk megastars the Pogues, the band that has taken traditional Irish folk and ramshackle rock to the bright pop lights of Wembley. In this rather haphazard but proud spirit, the documentary, like the Pogues' career itself, continues: the band and the various famous rockers they've jammed with offering opinions and anecdotes in a surprisingly entertaining and often revealing manner. Even if you have absolutely no interest in the music, the vast array of pasty-faced uglies is really quite stunning.

Rallye Sanremo 1986

The drama which has followed the 1986 World Rally Championship continued as the drivers contested the week-long San Remo event in Italy. This classic review captures the action as the top teams battled out on the tarmac and gravel in their final Continental appearance before the Group B Peugeots, Lancias and Metros became outlawed. To do justice to the final fling of the 400bhp 4x4 monsters the cameramen searched out the finest spots to record the top-speed straights and the thousands of breathtaking sweeps along the Riviera. But there was more than the usual behind-the-scenes activities contributing to the overall picture and before the San Remo result was finalised there was action threatening to upset the entire championship.

On Our Land

After the creation of Israel in 1948, Palestinians who chose to remain on their land were banded into farming communities. Most of this land has since been lost to Israeli kibbutz and moshav settlements. The Palestinians, who number one in six Israeli citizens, now must commute to work in Israeli cities, or farm land that is no longer theirs. They also must contend with discriminatory practices in housing, employment, and education, even though they are Israeli citizens. Centering on Umm el-Fahm, the largest Arab village in Israel, ON OUR LAND tells the story of an ill treated segment of Israel's population which has largely been ignored.

The Scholar in Society: Northrop Frye in Conversation

This film interview affords a glimpse of a bold and learned mind illuminating important social issues. Responding to questions on the related topics of language, democracy, and the role of the modern university, acclaimed literary critic Northrop Frye explains why education is crucial: "A democracy cannot function without articulate citizens." Frye claims that the university is a place where individual liberty becomes possible, as students learn to question beliefs imposed by society. For Frye, reading and writing are "instruments of freedom."

Na Wai E Ho'ōla I Nā Iwi - Who Will Save the Bones?

From an ancient burial site at Honokahua, Maui, to the streets of Honolulu, the issue of protecting ancestral remains from development is brought passionately to the public’s attention by Hawaiian descendants. A few days before Christmas, 1988, a 24-hour vigil is held at the state capitol to protest the excavation of almost 900 ancient burials from the sands of Maui’s Honokahua bay by archeologists contracted to clear the area for construction of a new Ritz Carlton resort. The effort to stop the desecration is met with overwhelming support from the community and soon an agreement is reached between the state government and the developer to move the hotel site and reinter the bones. This collective action eventually resulted in legislation to repatriate ancestral remains from universities and museums throughout the world and protect burial sites throughout Hawai‘i.

1000 Lakes Rally 1988

The 1000 Lakes Rally 1988 was stunning. Championship leader Miki Biasion elected not to enter, so the Martini Lancia Team was spearheaded by Markku Alen and Mikael Erricsson. Ford hoped to challenge the all conquering Integrales. The Cosworth RS of Didier Auriol fought through the field to hassle the Lancia team. The Toyota Celica GT-Four in the fast care of Juha Kankkunen provided one of the highlights and Mazda made a rare appearance with two 323 Turbos for Timo Salonen and Hannu Mikkola. Add to these, Ari Vatanen in the BMW M3, and you can see why the 1000 Lakes rates so high in all rally drivers esteem.
