House Music: A Cultural Revolution

House music is a genre that connects, uplifts, and unites people. It resonates globally and is prevalent on the world’s biggest music stages. Born in Chicago, this sound developed during the turbulent 1970s when a group of predominantly gay Black artists, who faced constant harassment, pioneered a new type of dance music at underground venues. House music became the anthem of safe spaces, free from the racism and homophobia of the outside world, ultimately igniting a cultural and musical revolution.

The Dancer

For Ahmad Joudeh, a stateless refugee from Syria, dance is not a choice, it’s a lifeline – etched onto his very skin with the words “Dance or Die.” Having defied war and family disapproval to join the Dutch National Ballet, Ahmad found sanctuary in the Netherlands, becoming a UNHCR and LGBTQI+ Ambassador. But haunted by the trauma of his past, he makes a perilous decision: to return to Syria for the first time since the war, risking everything to bring the healing power of dance to a community still ravaged by conflict.

Siticulosa

Siticulosa’s multidisciplinary research considers the relationship between archaeology, geology and agriculture in the Puglian landscape. “Parched” or “very dry”, as in Horace’s description of the region (Siticulosa Apulia), continues to be an accurate description of the dominant conditions that allow for the appearance of crop marks to indicate the presence of archaeological sites beneath. The film is a study of a territory, and the marks and wounds that it bears of a history of pillage, but also a portrait of the people that inhabit it (farmers, antique dealers, amateur archaeologists, local historians) and their symbiotic relationship to the landscape.

The Long Road to the Director's Chair

In 1973, the First International Women's Film Seminar, organized by Claudia von Alemann and Heike Sander, took place in Berlin and is considered one of the first feminist women's film festivals ever. Norwegian director Vibeke Løkkeberg was invited with her film ABORT (1971) and traveled with her film team to document this crucial networking event of the feminist media movement. She filmed the plenary discussions and conducted interviews. Due to a lack of funding, the footage was forgotten. Only 50 years later, the material was rediscovered in the Norwegian National Library, and Løkkeberg seized the opportunity. It is a time travel into the second wave of feminism in the 1960s and 1970s. Keywords from the discussions of that time remain relevant today: abortion, sexual education, wage discrimination, and health issues. The result is a fascinating portrait of women determined to make films on their terms

When he reveals to his students that he is battling leukemia, they spread the humanitarian campaign for his treatment to the public.
