El Film Justifica los Medios

Through the recovery and re-montage of various film fragments and the commentary of three filmmakers - Carlos Álvarez, Marta Rodríguez, and Carlos Sánchez - a historical and aesthetic journey is proposed through a foundational moment for filmmaking in Colombia (1965-1975), whose images constitute a revolution on the screen. This documentary journey tells how, at a time when the film industry was just being consolidated, a generation of young filmmakers brought about a moment of rupture, subverting official cinema by taking the media to experiment, denounce and narrate other realities in Colombia at the end of the 1960s.

Children’s Game #25: Contagio

An update of tag, the scariest of kids’ games. Instead of the touched person being “frozen,” they are contaminated and activated as viral transmitters. Boys and girls sport face coverings, any colour but red, the colour of contagion, worn by the first It. On catching someone the tagger shouts “Contagio!” and the victim echoes, “Contagiado!” Infected! while changing into a red mask (already glimpsed peeping from pockets, in fatalistic preparedness) to become It. The last child standing cries “Survivor!” In August 2021, 43 Mexican minors officially died of Covid; the true figure would be much higher. Tag was always about the menace of other people, but Contagio is brutally literal.

Plastic Heads

The analogy likens plastic pollution to a person wearing a plastic bag on their head, illustrating how our beautiful and clean surroundings are at risk due to plastic contamination. It suggests that every individual space is susceptible to this pollution. The central idea advocates acknowledging our current reality and taking initial steps to improve it, preventing the repetition of the same mistakes for future generations. The proposed solution focuses on starting with a basic action – reducing the use of plastic bags. The concept encourages individuals to recognize their role in the issue and emphasizes that by collectively making small changes, such as eliminating plastic bags, we can free ourselves from the metaphorical plastic mask covering our environment. This approach aims to create awareness and instigate a positive shift toward a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Among The Seven Islands

In the 60s of the XX century the construction of the Nizhnekamsk hydroelectric power station began. According to the plan, 173,000 hectares of land in the republics of Tatarstan, Bashkortostan and the Perm region were to remain under water. Here preparatory work begins: forests are cut down, electrical lines are disabled, the dead of the local cemetery are reburied, residential buildings are destroyed, 700 thousand people are resettled. The village of Semiostrovo was also in the flood zone, and in 1976 the population left these lands, but one person remained. At the same time, despite the government's warnings, the village was not flooded.
