Längtan till Áhkká

In 1921, Arthur Thelin fulfilled his lifelong dream by participating in the first recorded expedition to Áhkká and Stortoppen, chronicling his experiences in his journal, with key moments captured through the lens of legendary photographer Borg Mesch. One century later, in 2021, professional freeskier Magnus Granér embarks on a journey to retrace his great-grandfather Arthur's steps, accompanied by his filmmaking friends, to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the original expedition.

Fortune

The film takes the viewer on an embodied journey moving through a space in which its existence in the real or imagined is debatable. Alike how the alleyway is a physical bridge between two main streets, the film presents a series of juxtaposed images that might seem opposing at a glance – the seer and the seen, the outside and inside, young and old, low and high, the leaving, coming, and returning – but are co-existing elements that sustain the living and breathing of the alleyway. The tactility of witnessing inherently embodied by the 16 mm celluloid is mirrored by the witnessing(s) of the tourists, the residents, the non-human subjects in the space. Via a constructed soundscape in which sonic elements from eastern spirituality find their prominence amongst real-life sounds, and through an embodied camera eye that moves freely in the geographical space of the alley, the film evokes a sense of magical realism which gives texture to the meditation on the Chinese American identity.

Time Passages

A pandemic rages across the globe. In the final months of his mother Elaine's late-stage dementia, gay filmmaker Kyle Henry uses his extensive family archive to travel back in time, exploring the complicated bonds of identity, history, and belonging in his large Texas family. Charting Elaine's promising early life through her years of motherhood and self-sacrifice, finally tracing their relationship to its inevitable end, Time Passages explores Kyle's conflicting feelings of love, grief, guilt, and helplessness. Beneath the Kodachrome smiles and grainy Super-8 home movies lie the difficult truths that so many families hide. With their unearthing, Time Passages becomes a memento mori: a testament to love, legacy and the things that carry us through life's most challenging times.

The Godwit was here

Bote de Boer, a farmer in Tjerkwerd in Southwest Friesland, is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the black-tailed godwit. This meadow bird is a rare sight in Friesland, yet it keeps returning to his farm, in large numbers at that. The farm is not doing well: the cow shed and tractor need replacing. They need cash, but the bank is not impressed by the godwits: they want to see healthy annual figures. “Everyone loves the birds on our land,” Astrid, Bote’s wife, says. “But nobody wants to pay for them.” While the farming family tries to survive, the same goes for the godwits.

Echoes of a Lost Gaza

Mariam Shahin has been making films about Gaza for over thirty years. When she moved to Gaza in 2005, she felt a powerful sense of optimism following the Israeli withdrawal. But by 2009, war had badly damaged its infrastructure, neighbourhoods, businesses and communities – and that optimism had evaporated. Now, in the wake of the even more destructive war that began on 7th October 2023, Mariam seeks out the people she has met in Gaza over the years – and reflects on the wasted potential and devastated lives after sixteen years of blockade and a year of one of the most destructive wars in Middle East history.

The Korean Variety Hour

Korean Variety Hour, produced by KBS in 1976, captures how Koreans of that era wished to present themselves to a foreign audience. Nearly 50 years later, KBS produced the documentary series Modern Korea, which, with the advantage of a half-century of hindsight, presents images of Korea's past without any additional commentary. By juxtaposing these two programs, the film invites viewers to reflect on how much, or how little, Koreans' perspectives and self-representation have changed over time.

Welcome to Yiddishland

An upbeat, witty, and timely exploration of a global community of artists creating innovative work in their quest to rediscover and revitalise the endangered Yiddish language. From behind-the-scenes with an acclaimed Yiddish-language version of Yentl in Melbourne, to enjoyably transgressive punk-Klezmer musicians, and Barrie Kosky’s latest trailblazing production in Berlin – the endangered Yiddish language is alive and well in this rousing documentary. The language originated amongst the Jewish community in Eastern Europe, but almost disappeared when more than half of the world’s Yiddish speakers were murdered during the Holocaust. Most of the artists and performers (aka Yiddishists) in the film didn’t grow up speaking Yiddish, but all have found solace, identity, and inspiration in its rich traditions and culture. Ros Horin has mapped a fascinating cultural history.

October 7 - War without End?

Where is the Middle East one year after Hamas' terrorist attack on Israel? Is there a prospect of peace? What could this solution look like? Or is the war spreading? These big questions are in the background of the two personal stories in this documentary. Israeli Gil Dickmann is fighting for the release of his cousin Carmel. She was abducted as a hostage in the Gaza Strip during the Palestinian terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Between fear, frustration and hope, Gil has become one of the spokespeople for the hostage families, who are putting pressure on the Israeli government of Prime Minister Netanyahu with numerous protests and actions. In the Gaza Strip, too, people are desperately hoping for such an agreement that could end the war and the deaths. 14-year-old Usaama lost 19 family members in an Israeli attack. He himself survived with serious injuries, but even after several operations he cannot walk.
