Fruit of Thy Womb

This movie is a journey through the director’s childhood. Fábio Silva uses the cinematic apparatus to take us on a trip to the past, to his past, towards the reasons behind his current estrangement from his father, calling on home videos as evidence of his account. A mysterious film in which the young filmmaker risks exposing his family privacy, full of betrayal and forgiveness. It is a privilege to watch a story told with such boldness, in which the boundaries between author, audience, and family trauma are barely distinguishable.

We'll Always Have Paris

In "We'll always have Paris," the Eifel Tower, Champs-Élysées, magnificent fountains, and trimmed hedges stand as faux French in the hazy rain of Tianducheng. The residential complex located in the suburbs of the Chinese megapolis Hangzhou is one of the countless, largely unpopulated pop-up sites that sprung up overnight through high-speed real-estate speculation. In Raidel’s film, the Eifel Tower is the anti-gravity center of a phantom zone furnished with stark high-rises, parking areas, and gardens—an urban proposition that amounts to nothing.

Bellum - The Daemon of War

In Bellum, modern warfare and the development of AI are connecting three seemingly disparate locations and lives; a scientist in Sweden, a private military contractor in the Nevada desert in the USA and a world renowned war photographer in Afghanistan. Through their actions and decisions, the film delves into the jargons and logics that pushes warfare forward. It’s often said that war is inhumane. But in this film, this assumption is turned upside down. Because in fact it seems there is nothing more human than war. Humanity has always been at war, often over abstract ideas such as nationality, borders, religion, money or freedom and this is something that in fact distinguishes us from all other animals on this planet. Perhaps the Greco-Roman world was right that war was a demon; Bellum. And, that the war actually feeds itself: “Bellum se ipsum alet”.

Iranian Lives Matter

Made with virtually no budget during COVID-19 quarantine in 2020, IRANIAN LIVES MATTER abstractly recounts the true story of what occurred in Iran during the November 2019 protests, sparked by a surprise hike in gasoline prices, which quickly spread across the entire nation and was subsequently crushed by the dictator's iron fist, resulting in the death of approximately 1500 protesters, as reported by Reuters. IRANIAN LIVES MATTER is an experimental documentary, an audio-visual endurance test that audibly takes its audience through the chaos in the streets of Iran as the brutal regime cracks down on Iranian protesters, while visually showing the hands of the dictatorship as it crosses out 1500 lives one by one to further emphasize the scale of the massacre and show to a world desensitized to news of mass killings in the Middle East what the term "1500 dead" truly means.

Backstreet to the American Dream

Backstreet to the American Dream is a bilingual documentary that explores the modern-day American Dream. This deep dive into the birthplace of the food truck revolution – Los Angeles – juxtaposes the experiences of American entrepreneurs and Mexican immigrants in the industry, and looks at how street food fosters racial tolerance. Indeed, central to the story are two very distinct enterprises: El Pescadito - a seafood truck that’s been parking at the same swap meet in South L.A. since 1982, and Grill ‘Em All, the prestigious first-season winner of The Great Food Truck Race on The Food Network in 2010.

Dysphoric: Fleeing Womanhood Like a House on Fire

‘Dysphoric’ is a documentary on the rise of Gender Identity Ideology and its effects on women and girls - especially in developing countries. The film explores gender transition, the permanent medical side-effects of hormones and surgeries, the propaganda by 'woke' corporations that glorifies thousands of stereotypical gender presentations coalesced as fashion, a surge in pronoun policing, language hijacking that calls women ‘menstruators’, and the many hurdles women face while trying to question this modern-day misogyny. The film amplifies the voices of detransitioners, clinicians, psychiatrists, sociologists, feminists, academics and concerned citizens.

These Times Are Not For Us

For some people, the legendary singer Jan Nedvěd represents an obsolete kitsch artist, for others a musical cult icon representing values that are rapidly disappearing. The documentary follows the daily life of a musician, advanced in his years, who embarks on (perhaps) his last tour, recalling his youth spent in the great outdoors and recounting criticism he received for performing at political demonstrations. A series of interviews with Nedvěd about his passion for music, interpersonal skills, and his twilight years supplement commentaries on loved ones, loyal fans, today's young vagabonds, and the humorous controversy of contemporary musicians stiffly parodying Nedvěd's own songs.

Soul of the Earth

The breadth and physiographic diversity that characterize the Melgaço border offered multiple possibilities of passage during the time of smuggling and immigration by leaps and hops. And it is in this mythical place that the roots of a multifaceted artist are born. Madalena Lima infects us with her intelligent, expressive and ironic way of being. Her work celebrates traditions and opportunities, as well as revealing contradictions and weaknesses, experimenting with new techniques without neglecting the concept. By telling her story, we enter into symbiosis with the landmarks that imprint a unique identity to this land in Minho.

La Piave

La Piave is an attempt to describe the Piave river and its surroundings as a character in constant change. Each chapter shows a different research session in which the landscape is analyzed in its structure through individual shots, thus forming a naturalist mosaic that accounts for the different conformations of the territory over the years. This first part collects the documentation of the place made by me between 2017 and 2021, as well as a couple of found footage sequences.

The Golden Afternoon

On a sweltering afternoon in the summer of 2003, to celebrate his fiftieth birthday, Martin Newell performed a career-spanning set of songs at Colchester Arts Centre. Aided and abetted by a band of musicians that includes his old partner Nelson, from the Brotherhood of Lizards, Martin performed a wonderful 100 minute show that took in both his earliest songs and brand new compositions given their first live outing. The footage lay forgotten for almost twenty years but has now been lovingly assembled & restored for your viewing pleasure by director Michael Cumming.
