bleared eyes of blue glass

The "bleared eyes of blue glass" in the title of this experimental short expand on a verbal image from Virginia Woolf's novel The Waves, considered the most experimental among the 20th-century British writer's literary works, from which the young filmmaker took inspiration for his film, borrowing passages and visions to explain his own understanding of what cinema is. A film that plays with water - precisely - and light, and yet in a very dark b&w lit up by rare flashes of colour, making a journey in the night in which the shadow of a man gradually acquires substance.

The World Cup of Their Own

This is a 'Minority Report [or the Report on Minorities]' captured during the 2002 Korea - Japan World Cup season. The huge suvvess of this sports festival bolstered 'national pride' among many Koreans, who have forgotten that feeling for a long time while it gave some people a feeling of despair. Those who despaired that this soccer event completely excluded 'minority' voices who suffer from bitter reality and ordeal. This festive event was only for the majority of people who think they represent Korean as a whole.

Big Tree County

"The sulphur-iron mine is located at the common boundary of Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou province, with an area of 1774 square meters. The Yong Ning River originated from here, flowing northward 108 kilometers into the Yangtze River. The mine was established in 1950 and its products are mainly exported, with some concentrated uses within in the county. We found this place in the newspaper by accident; it's called Big Tree County. Many years ago, it was part of the forest along the Yangtze River. A sulphur-iron mine was discovered in the 1920s, which started large-scale sulphur smelting. Now the old way of sulphur smelting is ranking first in the country[sic]. On our second day there, in this remote valley in the southern part of Sichuan province with hundreds of thousands of people living there, we met a boy named Tan Cong. We then got to know his family, as well as a local school teacher, and some of the locals smelting the sulphur."

Temporary

The factories which were abandoned, the temporaries who were employed on a temporary basis, and the words were painted on the edge of the wall of the city. They were dirty humble but very strong, it reflects the real situation of "workers" in the social class. These factories, workers, and wall were utterly discarded after being used up, without any responsibility and affection. They were "relics" of the modern industrial process, and now left behind in the edge of the city and barren. We try to record the imminent disappearance of these graffiti walls, abandoned factories, are the temporary workers in an atypical way. Because of these images usually remind us that the city hides a group of incomplete consciousness and the body, they are in the search for a possible survival, a possible aesthetic, a desolate before the disappearance.

Birthday Cakes from China

Starting from the children’s party where Zhang Shengjia celebrated his ninth birthday at a KFC fast food restaurant in 2006, the Chinese artist and filmmaker’s essayistic archive film unfolds a cheerful cultural history of the birthday cake from a Chinese perspective. The convention reached China from Western Europe and North America in the early 20th century and merged with local birthday traditions. The constantly growing influence of Western consumer culture since Deng Xiaoping’s economic reforms of the 1980s was exemplified in 1990 when almost 13,000 customers were registered on the opening day of the country’s very first McDonald’s restaurant in Shenzhen.

Furano: Life in Hokkaido's Frozen Forest

Where temperatures fall so low that even the trees can freeze and explode, the flora and fauna of a certain forest in Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido have evolved clever and curious ways to survive the cold. Squirrels rely not just on memory but also on an enhanced sense of smell to locate their stashes of nuts under the snow. A particular species of woodpecker carves a deep, roomy hole in a dense white pine for a nest, feasting on the ants it somehow knows are inside. And a coniferous tree native only to this region has devised an ingenious way of self-defense. The question is not how cold is cold, but how to exist in spite of it all.
